Sign Up for a Free Descript Account
To begin, visit the Descript website (https://www.descript.com/) and sign up for a free account. The free plan provides a limited number of transcription hours per month, which is a great starting point for most users. Keep in mind this free Transcription helps you explore the platform and transcribe your videos before needing an upgraded plan.
Download and Install the Descript Application
Once you've created your account, download and install the Descript application on your computer. Descript offers both Windows and macOS versions, ensuring compatibility with your operating system. The application is lightweight and easy to install, with a straightforward installation process.
Create a New Project
After installing Descript, launch the application and create a new project. This will serve as a container for your video and its associated transcript. Give your project a descriptive name to help you stay organized.
To create a new project:
- Click the '+ New' button.
- Select 'Project'.
- Give your project a Relevant name, such as "Video Transcription Project."
- Click 'Create Project'.
Import Your Video File
Import your video file into the Descript project. You can either drag and drop the file directly into the application or use the 'Choose a File' option to browse your computer's file system. Descript supports a wide range of video formats, including MP4, MOV, and AVI.
Importing your video is a simple process, ensuring that you can quickly begin transcribing your content without compatibility issues.
The software will automatically start initializing and processing the video file. Wait for the process to complete before moving on to the next step.
Initiate the Transcription Process
Once your video is uploaded, Descript will Prompt you to transcribe the file. Select the appropriate language for the transcription (English is the default) and confirm that you want to proceed. Descript will then automatically analyze the audio and generate a transcript.
Choose your language from the prompt then click 'Done'. A 4-minute video can take a few minutes to complete.
Review and Edit the Transcript
After the transcription is complete, carefully review the generated transcript and make any necessary edits. While Descript's transcription accuracy is generally high, errors can still occur, especially with complex terminology or background noise. Descript offers a document style interface to enable quick editing and review.
The software highlights the section of the script that is being spoken to help guide users during the editing process.
Export the Transcript
Once you're satisfied with the accuracy of the transcript, export it in your preferred format. Descript supports various export options, including TXT, SRT, and WORD documents. Choose the format that best suits your needs.
Once you click publish the transcript is finished, enabling you to distribute.
