Early Life and Noble Lineage
Hazrat Ruqayyah (RA) was born in Mecca, approximately one year after the passing of the Prophet Muhammad's (PBUH) son, Qasim.
Her parents were none other than Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Hazrat Khadija (RA), two individuals of immense stature in Islamic history. Her birth, occurring when the Prophet (PBUH) was 32 years old and Hazrat Khadija (RA) was 47, brought solace to their sorrowful home after the loss of their son. The name Ruqayyah, meaning 'one who rises, influences, and inspires,' proved to be prophetic in capturing the essence of her life. Like her siblings, including Hazrat Zainab, Hazrat Umm Kulthum, and Hazrat Fatima, Ruqayyah grew up in the care of a wise, patient, and intelligent mother, Hazrat Khadija (RA). This nurturing environment significantly impacted her character, instilling within her a sense of honor, respect, and kindness, qualities for which she would be revered. As the story goes, similar to Zaynab, Rukiya Radhiyallahuanha was breastfed by Salma the servant of Hadhrat Sophia, the Prophet's aunt. The Prophet (SAW) offered an Aqiqah sacrifice for his daughter which is a celebration of the birth and gave silver to the poor equal to the weight of her hair, a kindness given to those in need.
