Brain Rot: Cartoon Memes and Cursed Abstraction
The Brain Rot prompt sought to test the limits of nonsensical content creation using Luma Dream Machine. The AI introduced cartoon-like elements into the video, interjecting meme-like cartoon characters. This approach initially appeared to steer the content towards the absurd.
However, as the generations progressed, the AI introduced the addition of warped cartoon characters in the frame.
The initial video involved the following elements:
- The starting point of the video was Grant Wisler talking about the product.
- A quesadilla on a plate next to a toilet with a head on it.
- Text overlaying the video that said "Skibidi Meals Skibidi Slicer"
- A woman appearing to be running from an area on fire.
As for the AI, the new commercial features:
- Bizarre cartoon characters that look similar to characters from the hit series, "Yo Gabba Gabba!"
- The text for the Skibidi Meal has turned into an evil cartoon face.
- By the seventh generation, there are the addition of seemingly random household products that are in the forefront. The screen becomes increasingly distorted with each generation.
By generation 10, the actual elements of the commercial, the food and even the Grant Wisler image have disappeared completely. The entire video ends up looking like a kaleidoscope of colors and odd shapes.
Depressing Commercial: Emptiness and Frustration
In stark contrast, the depressing commercial took a different turn. The Luma Dream Machine AI initially tried to create something sad with the prompt, but seemingly failed to generate any results. The AI didn't seem to fully grasp the intended prompt, even after changing some terms.
In its interpretation of 'depressing,' the AI generated a completely new setting by generation two. This completely new setting involved a dining room with a table and chairs and all the elements on top of it. Yet, something seemed to be amiss.
The elements of this dining room involved:
- There are three chairs arranged around the table, yet in the fourth scene, another chair spawns into the frame seemingly out of nowhere.
- The focus starts to zoom in on all the elements.
- There appears to be the Skibidi toilet figure. At this point the scene just transitions to a plain beige wall.
There is a new video that's spawned with a single zoom on the plain beige wall, voiding any actual sign of food or connection to the video as it's original source. In this sense, it's even more depressing as the AI cannot even seem to figure out Where To go or what to do. It simply ends with a brown screen. In fact, it's worth mentioning again that the creator actually had to pay for this result!
To make things even more ironic, when this video result did not come to fruition, the actual video was named the company, "Luma." In this Scenario, the scene pans out, there's a barren desert, and then the title of the product shows up. The experimenter has been left feeling confused and empty about the entire experience.
Scary Commercial: An Unpredictable Descent into Nightmares
Out of the three prompts, the AI actually interpreted the 'Scary Commercial' one correctly. With the original image from the Grant Wisler commercial,
the video started by dripping yellow cheese-like material all over the shot of the two quesadilla slices. The AI seemed to follow the instructions. Here is where things get very interesting. As the AI begins the video, it zooms into the shot, but cuts to a scene where there seems to be a man (the chef as stated by the experimenter) and what seems to be the desert background from the beginning.
Soon enough, it then cuts directly to the background. In summary, the elements of a horror movie commercial had all come together in a cursed, strange way. The problem is, there was no food. Later, the man (the chef) would take up most of the screen, as if yelling from his lungs something scary, or Advertising the quesadillas. Finally, the video ends when these elements form into dark smoke clouds in a way that does actually disturb, the whole thing.
At the end, the result is an incredibly haunting set of visuals and imagery that one would not want to see, or be associated with a food product. Of the three different video tests, this one was by far the most effective, creating some genuinely disturbing and cursed visuals.
Final Results: How Far Can it Go?
The Luma Dream Machine AI is a fascinating showcase of AI's ability to create videos with minimal direction. But the technology isn't perfect. As evidenced by the cursed outputs described above, the results can be unpredictable. Still, by testing Luma Dream Machine through a series of distinct prompts, one can draw some unique conclusions about the nature of how the tool generates videos.
Here's a breakdown of how Luma Dream Machine worked and the conclusions that came out of the experiment:
- Divergence: The depressing prompt demonstrated that the AI can completely deviate from the original source, creating something entirely unrelated. Luma Dream Machine may have the potential to create something unique, however the output itself may not be what the user is actually looking for.
- Cursed Creations: The scary prompt illustrated how effective the AI could be at generating 'cursed' or disturbing content when given a specific theme. This experiment shows the power that Luma Dream Machine might have. However, as the experiment shows, power does not necessarily mean that the results will come out consistent.
- The Importance of Clear Instructions: The brain rot prompt, initially intended to produce nonsensical content, showed the importance of careful prompt engineering. Although the result wasn't fully as intended, the AI still managed to create something that fulfilled the prompt to a degree.
- The original hypothesis stated that the depressing ad would stray far from the content, but the scary commercial would be the most cursed. However, the hypothesis turned out to be backwards. The scary commercial was both the most effective, but also the most predictable. On the other HAND, the depressing commercial was the one that ran wild and completely failed to produce anything related to the material, creating an empty void.
Here is a quick table that summarizes the results from the videos:
Prompts |
Actual Result |
Brain Rot |
Cartoonish and nonsensical, but ultimately recognizable as an iteration of the original video |
Depressing |
An empty, vacant world. Very little sign of the source, and depressing for all the wrong reasons. |
Horrifying |
A genuinely spooky, but slightly recognizable iteration. |
