Step 1: Access the SAM 2 Demo
To begin using Meta Segment Anything 2, start by navigating to the SAM 2 demo website using your web browser.
This demo provides a hands-on experience with the tool’s capabilities without requiring any software downloads or installations. Ensure your internet connection is stable for a smooth experience.
Step 2: Upload or Select a Video
Once on the demo website, you'll find an option to upload your own video or choose from a selection of sample videos provided.
For your first try, it's often easier to use the sample videos to get a feel for how the tool works. If you prefer to use your own video, make sure it is in a common video format such as MP4 or MOV.
Step 3: Select an Object
After the video is loaded, click on the object you want to isolate. SAM 2 uses this initial click to identify the object and automatically create a mask around it.
The tool’s AI will attempt to define the object’s boundaries based on your initial selection. Note that SAM 2 might not be perfect on the first try, especially if the video has complex scenes.
Step 4: Refine the Mask
If the initial mask isn't perfect, you can refine it by adding or removing areas. Use the “Add” and “Remove” tools provided in the interface to correct any imperfections.
Clicking on areas you want to include or exclude will adjust the mask accordingly. Make sure the selected object is clearly defined to track properly. SAM 2 needs the ability to track what it is you're looking for.
Step 5: Track the Object
Once you're satisfied with the initial mask, click the “Track Objects” button. SAM 2 will then analyze the video and automatically adjust the mask as the object moves throughout the footage.
This process may take a few moments, depending on the length of the video and the complexity of the object’s movements. If you see that the object becomes poorly tracked, you can adjust the tracking to ensure that it is correct to the best of your ability.
Step 6: Remove Background and Apply Effects
With the object successfully tracked, you can now remove the background. Select the “Erase” option from the background effects menu to make the background transparent. You can also experiment with other effects, such as adding a gradient, pixelating the background, or converting it to grayscale. Now, you can create the scene you truly want.
Step 7: Download or Share Your Edited Video
Once you're happy with the final result, you can download the edited video to your computer or share it online via a shareable link. The download option allows you to save the video in a common format for use in other projects or platforms.
