🖥️ Gaming with the Radeon HD 6870: A Look Back in 2021

The Radeon HD 6870 was a mid-range graphics card released by AMD in 2010. In this article, we will explore how it performs in today's gaming landscape. With its launch price at $239, this card was once a popular option for gamers. However, in the current GPU shortage, you can find it being sold for around $40 to $50 on eBay. The HD 6870 was AMD's response to Nvidia's GTX 400 series, boasting 1120 stream processors, a 1GB DDR5 memory, a core clock of 900MHz, and a memory clock of 1.05GHz. It was built on TSMC's 40nm manufacturing process and codenamed "Terra Scale 2".

2 Gigabyte Inifinity Invariant

Today, we'll be specifically looking at the 2GB Infinity Invariant variant made by Vision Tech. This model maintains the same core and memory clock speeds as the reference design, but it stands out with its six mini display ports. Using AMD's Infinity technology, these display ports allow for up to six monitors to be combined into a single large display. This unique feature sets it apart from other models of the HD 6870.

Thermal Performance of Radeon HD 6870

Let's start by discussing the thermals of the Radeon HD 6870. Like most GPUs from its era, this card tends to run warm. At idle, it sits at a reasonable temperature of 40 degrees Celsius. However, when under gaming load, the temperature rises to 72 degrees Celsius, and under synthetic load, it can reach up to 82 degrees Celsius. Despite these temperatures, the HD 6870 remains cooler than the MSI GTX 780 Lightning that we reviewed recently.

Gaming Benchmarks of Radeon HD 6870

Now, let's dive into the main event: gaming benchmarks. Today, we will be testing the HD 6870 at 1080p resolution with low to medium settings. We'll start with the popular esports title Counter-Strike: Global Offensive. At 1080p and low settings, we achieved a maximum frame rate of 268 FPS and an average of 161 FPS. Although there were occasional dips to 25 FPS in smokes, overall, the gameplay experience was fairly smooth.

Moving on to another esports title, Valorant, we continued to see success with the HD 6870. At 1080p and low settings, we obtained a maximum FPS of 328, with an average of 215 FPS. The Game remained very playable, with minimum FPS only dropping to 100.

Next, we tested the card on Fortnite using the performance API settings. We achieved a maximum of 228 FPS and an average of 111 FPS. While the lows dipped to around 48 FPS, the overall experience was still very playable, making it suitable for competitive FPS needs.

In Rocket League, a popular car soccer game, the HD 6870 performed admirably on high settings at 1080p. We maintained a solid average of 60 FPS, with highs of 70 FPS and minimal drops to 52 FPS. The gameplay experience remained smooth and consistent.

Moving on to racing games, we first tried out Project Cars 2 on high settings. Despite an average of 35 FPS and minimums of 25 FPS, the game felt quite playable. Racing games, in particular, can be enjoyed at lower frame rates, and the visual fidelity of the game was satisfying on high settings.

For Dirt Rally 2.0, we had to lower the settings to medium due to the card's 2GB VRAM limitation. Even on medium settings, the HD 6870 delivered a console-like experience, with an average of 30 FPS, lows of 25 FPS, and a high of 44 FPS. While not the smoothest FPS, it remained playable and visually appealing.

Lastly, we tested the HD 6870 on Valheim, one of the hottest games currently in early access. Running at 1080p and low settings, the card struggled to achieve a playable experience. With an average of 25 FPS, a maximum of 32 FPS, and a minimum of 15 FPS, we wouldn't recommend using this card for Valheim, even after lowering the resolution to 720p.

Conclusion

In conclusion, the Radeon HD 6870, despite its age, still holds up reasonably well for light gaming and esports titles. With its affordable price and decent performance in games like Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Valorant, it could be a suitable option for budget-conscious gamers or those looking to upgrade an older PC. However, the limited 2GB VRAM restricts its capabilities and makes it less suitable for modern, demanding games. If you're considering purchasing a graphics card from this era, it's recommended to look for a GPU from the AMD 7000 or 7900 series.
