Introduction

In recent months, there has been a flurry of product launches, particularly in the GPU market. One of the latest surprises came from Nvidia, who released refreshed versions of their 2060 series from 2017 and 2018, known as the "Super" series. Gigabyte sent over their gaming OC variants of the RTX 2080 Super, and in this article, we will be putting the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC through its paces in a series of benchmarks. We'll take a close look at its performance, test it against other GPUs, discuss its thermals, and evaluate its price-to-performance ratio.

Testing System Configuration

Before diving into the benchmarks, let's first discuss the system configuration used for testing. Our test system consists of a Gigabyte Z370 Aorus Ultra Gaming motherboard, an i7 8700K processor, and 16GB of XPG D30 RAM running at 3200MHz. This new configuration offers a slight performance boost compared to our previous setup, and we are using an open-air test bench for more accurate thermals.

We have also included the results of other recently tested GPUs in order to provide context for the performance of the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Performance

One of the first benchmarks we conducted was in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a Game that features an in-built benchmark tool. The average frame rates achieved by the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC at different resolutions were as follows:

  • 1080p: 137 frames per Second
  • 1440p: 109 frames per second
  • 4k: 62 frames per second

These results indicate that the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC performs admirably in Shadow of the Tomb Raider, offering smooth gameplay even at higher resolutions.

Unigine Superposition Benchmark

Moving on, we conducted the Unigine Superposition benchmark to further test the performance of the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC. We performed three different tests using different presets. Here are the average frame rates achieved by the GPU:

  • 1440p (Custom): 147 frames per second
  • 4k (Optimized): 72 frames per second
  • 1080p (Extreme): 54 frames per second

These results show that the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC delivers excellent performance in the Unigine Superposition benchmark across various presets and resolutions.

Final Fantasy 15 Benchmark

Lastly, we used the Final Fantasy 15 benchmarking tool to further evaluate the performance of the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC. The GPU rendered the following number of frames:

  • 1080p: 11,677 frames
  • 1440p: 8,954 frames
  • 4k: 5,176 frames

Based on these results, the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC performs consistently well in the Final Fantasy 15 benchmark, offering a smooth gaming experience at different resolutions.

Thermal Performance

While we did not conduct extensive thermal testing due to the controlled environment of our open-air test bench, it is worth mentioning that the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC performed well in terms of thermals. Throughout our benchmarking Sessions, the GPU remained at a temperature of approximately 64 degrees Celsius with the fans operating at an automatic curve. The fans were virtually silent, ensuring a quiet gaming experience.

Pricing and Conclusion

The Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC is priced at 1339 Australian dollars. While it offers a slight performance boost compared to the non-Super version, the nearly $200 premium may not be justifiable for some consumers. In the Australian market, where prices are relatively high, this GPU may not be affordable for many users. We believe it is crucial for Nvidia to reconsider their pricing strategy in order to make high-performance GPUs more accessible to the general audience.

In conclusion, the Gigabyte RTX 2080 Super Gaming OC delivers impressive performance in various benchmarks, providing smooth gameplay at different resolutions. However, the pricing may be a deterrent for potential buyers, especially in markets where the GPU is considered expensive. It is essential for consumers to assess their budget and performance requirements before making a purchasing decision.
