Welcome to the Procreate Animation Crash Course! In this short workshop tutorial, we will learn how to create stunning animations using Procreate. If You are new to Procreate and didn't know about its animation feature, you're in the right place. Procreate has become an essential tool for creating beautiful animations, and the latest version offers a wide range of options to unleash your creativity.

Creating an Animation Canvas in Procreate

To start creating animations in Procreate, we need to set up an animation canvas. Open Procreate and tap on the "+" button to create a new canvas. You can choose from different canvas options, but for sharing on social media, the screen size option is recommended. The screen size will vary depending on the iPad you are using. Make sure to have a 2018 or later iPad with an Apple Pencil for the best drawing experience. The larger the screen, the easier it will be to draw. Once you have selected the screen size canvas, go to the wrench tool, tap on the action tool, and choose Canvas. Enable the animation assist toggle to access the animation menu.

Drawing the First Frames of the Animation

In the animation menu, you can start creating frames for your animation. Each frame will be a separate layer that contributes to the movement. To add frames, tap on the "Add Frame" button. Procreate creates new layers for each frame, allowing you to draw/animate each frame individually. You can select multiple frames by swiping right and group them together to create a single frame. The number of groups determines the number of frames in your animation. Use different brushes to draw on each frame, creating a sequence of movements. Playing with Timing and Onion Skin Frames

You can choose between loop, ping pong, and one-shot options. Loop makes the animation play repeatedly, ping pong makes it go back and forth, and one-shot plays the animation only once. Adjust the frames per Second (FPS) to control the speed of the animation. The standard FPS is 15, but you can experiment with different values. Onion skin frames Show the previous and next frames as Ghost images, helping you Create smooth transitions between frames.

Once you have the basic animation sequence, it's time to refine and add details. Play around with timing, adjust the duration of frames, and experiment with different effects. Don't be afraid to redraw frames or adjust the Shape and size of the elements in your animation. The more you refine and experiment, the better your animation will become. Remember, practice makes perfect.

After creating your masterpiece, it's time to export and share it with the world. Procreate offers exporting options for animated GIFs, animated PNGs, MP4s, and HVEC formats. GIFs are great for sharing on social media and can have transparent backgrounds. Animated videos are ideal for showcasing your animation skills. Choose the maximum resolution for high-quality exports. You can also optimize the export settings for web sharing. Once exported, you can save and share your animation with others.
