GPU Comparison: RTX 4080 vs. RX 7900 XT and RX 7900 XTX 🔍

In this video, we will be comparing the performance of the RTX 4080, RX 7900 XT, and RX 7900 XTX GPUs across a wide range of games. The current prices for these cards are: the cheapest RX 7900 XT is around $799, the cheapest RX 7900 XTX is around $979, and the cheapest RTX 4080 is around $1,150. Translating these to European prices, we have the RX 7900 XT at around €1,029, the RX 7900 XTX at around €1,169, and the RTX 4080 at a minimum of €1,309.

Plaguetail Requiem 🎮

At 1080p, the RTX 4080 is surprisingly the fastest card, being around 9 FPS faster than the RX 7900 XTX in both averages and one percent lows. At 1440p, the RX 7900 XTX manages to achieve virtually the same results as the RTX 4080 in terms of average FPS, but it still lags behind in terms of one percent lows. The RX 7900 XT is around 12% slower than the other two cards. It is only at 4K that the RX 7900 XTX finally manages to surpass the RTX 4080, being 5% faster.

Assassin's Creed Valhall 🗡️

In this Game, the results are pretty interesting. If you run the game without Smart Access Memory and Resizable Bar, the RTX 4080 is way faster than both AMD cards. However, as soon as you enable these features, the RX 7900 XTX takes the lead by 5%, and even the RX 7900 XT gets very close to the RTX 4080. At 1440p, things just get better for the AMD GPUs, with the RX 7900 XTX now being 8% faster than the RTX 4080 and the RX 7900 XT being just 4% slower while costing much less money. At 4K, Resizable Bar does increase the performance for the RTX 4080, but it is still not enough to beat the XTX, with the RX 7900 XT being very close to it.

Cyberpunk 2077 🌆

At 1080p, the RX 7900 XTX takes the lead with a 9% advantage in the averages and 17% in the one percent lows. It is interesting to note that this is one of the few games where Nvidia does benefit from using Resizable Bar, as it increases the performance considerably. At 1440p, the RX 7900 XTX loses a bit of its advantage over the RTX 4080, with the RX 7900 XT delivering pretty interesting results considering its price tag. At 4K, the RX 7900 XT matches the RTX 4080 performance, which is an outstanding result for a card costing at least $300 less.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 🔫

This is one of those games where the RDNA3 architecture really shines, as the game engine is ready to natively make use of all its power. The use of Smart Access Memory makes both AMD cards break the RTX 4080's performance, with the RX 7900 XTX being 37% faster and even the RX 7900 XT being 286% faster. At 1440p, the RX 7900 XTX is still 23% faster than the RTX 4080, and at 4K, the advantage gets further reduced to 14%, but the cheaper AMD card still performs considerably better.

Forza Horizon 5 🏎️

Contrary to Modern Warfare 2, Forza Horizon 5 is one of those titles that's having issues on the new AMD cards. At 1080p, the RTX 4080 easily leads the Chart, being 12% faster than the RX 7900 XTX and 50% faster than the RX 7900 XT. At 1440p, the RTX 4080's advantage over the RX 7900 XTX grows, but the one over the RX 7900 XT decreases, now being only 30% faster. Even at 4K, the RTX 4080 is 18% faster than the RX 7900 XTX and 31% faster than the RX 7900 XT, which are really bad results for the AMD cards.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 🛩️

This is a nice benchmark to have, as at 1080p with high-end cards, we can see the CPU overhead from all cards. Both AMD cards delivered from 10 to 15 average FPS more than the RTX 4080, even though they're all CPU-bottlenecked. This is due to the difference in the CPU overhead, where the Nvidia cards tend to suffer. At 1440p, the CPU bottleneck is much less, and that's why the RX 7900 XT now gets more in line with the RTX 4080 results. At 4K, it is where we are finally testing fully the GPUs instead of the CPUs, and that's why the RTX 4080 is now faster than the RX 7900 XT, although it is still slower than the RX 7900 XTX.

Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Extraction 🕹️

This game loves bandwidth and raw power, and that's why we got a massive performance difference, with the RX 7900 XTX delivering almost 100 average FPS over the RTX 4080, translating into a 30% difference in the averages and 49% in the one percent lows. Even the RX 7900 XT is faster than the RTX 4080 here. At 1440p, things start to get more in line with what they usually are, but even there, the way cheaper RX 7900 XT is still performing the same as the RTX 4080 and with way better one percent lows. It is only at 4K that the RTX 4080 finally manages to surpass the RX 7900 XT, but it is still around 8% slower than the RX 7900 XTX.

Red Dead Redemption 2 🤠

This game ran exceptionally well on the RX 6000 series from AMD compared to the RTX 3000 Series from Nvidia, but it seems Nvidia did a great job here, as the RTX 4080 is able to match the RX 7900 XT even with lower power draw. At 1440p, the RX 7900 XTX gets some ground over the RTX 4080, now delivering a bit more average FPS but most importantly, almost double the minimum FPS. At 4K, nothing really changes in terms of performance, with the RTX 4080 delivering very good results, but the AMD cards delivering a much smoother gameplay.

Guardians of the Galaxy 🌌

This game got a very good performance uplift after the AMD 23.2.1 drivers, but sadly, since I do not own the RX 7900 XT anymore, I couldn't test it with a newer driver, so the performance you see here is lower than what it should be. At 1080p, we get massively CPU-bottlenecked with these cards, even at ultra settings. Moving to 1440p, the CPU bottleneck is still there, leading to more or less the same results we have at 1080p. Finally, moving to 4K eliminates the bottleneck, with the RTX 4080 finally surpassing the RX 7900 XTX by a little, while the RX 7900 XT falls considerably behind due to not using the most recent drivers.

The Last of Us Part I 🎮

At 1080p, even though this game was made and remade for AMD Hardware, it still runs slower on it, with the RTX 4080 delivering around 7 average FPS more while consuming less power. At 1440p, the RTX 4080 delivers 9 average FPS more, translating to more or less 7% faster, but the AMD GPUs deliver higher one percent lows, indicating a smoother gameplay. At 4K, the AMD GPU finally manages to get virtually on par with the RTX 4080, which is nothing to be proud of as it should be performing quite better.

Destiny Rasterization 🚀

This game is a God of War for AMD GPUs, as they tend to perform better in this title. At 1080p, both the RX 7900 series perform better than the RTX 4080. At 1440p, the scales get maintained, with both AMD GPUs still performing better, but with the RX 7900 XT now having lower one percent lows than the RTX 4080. At 1440p Ultra-wide, not much changes, with the RTX 4080 just not being able to deliver as many FPS as the AMD cards do. Interestingly, the only card that does not suffer from FPS loss when using Smart Access Memory or Resizable Bar here is the RX 7900 XT.

In terms of average rasterization results, at 1080p, the RX 7900 XTX is 10% faster than the RTX 4080, with the RX 7900 XT also performing surprisingly well. At 1440p, the RX 7900 XTX is now 8.5% faster than the RTX 4080, and the 7900 XT is around 4% slower. At 4K, the RX 7900 XTX loses 1% advantage over the 1440p advantage, and the RX 7900 XT is now around 8% slower than the RTX 4080, but considering the price, it is well worth it.

Ray Tracing Performance 🌟

Metro Exodus Enhanced Edition

At 1080p, the RTX 4080 is much faster than both AMD cards in terms of averages, being 21% faster than the RX 7900 XT. However, it is at higher resolutions that the bigger differences come, with the RTX 4080 being 40% faster at 1440p and 51% faster at 4K, making it the only card able to run this game at 4K with these settings at over 60 average FPS.

Cyberpunk 2077

The results are once again the same, with both AMD cards being completely stomped by the RTX 4080. At 1080p native, the RTX 4080 delivers 51% more FPS than the RX 7900 XTX, and it is only able to decrease the value to 26% when using FSR or the LSS. At 1440p, it is exactly the opposite Scenario, where the native Ray tracing performance difference gets reduced, but the difference when using upscalers increases from 286% to 51%, which is a big difference in terms of gameplay smoothness.

Resident Evil 4

This is another new addition to the test, and sadly, another one with no RX 7900 XT results. At 1080p, the RX 7900 XTX delivers almost 40 average FPS over the RTX 4080, leading to a 21 FPS difference. Even when using ray tracing, the XTX manages to keep the lead, still being 13% faster. At 1440p, things don't really change much, with the RX 7900 XTX still being faster in both scenarios. At 4K, it is once again more of the same, and it seems that this game can actually take advantage of the AMD GPUs even when using ray tracing, leading this AMD GPU to its first win in terms of ray tracing.

Spider-Man Remastered

This is a game that uses a lot of PCIe bandwidth and a lot of CPU to process ray tracing, and this is why you see here that the AMD GPUs have more performance with ray tracing on, and the XTX delivering more performance than the RTX 4080 even with ray tracing on, basically due to the CPU overhead. At 1440p, the AMD GPUs still deliver higher performance with ray tracing on and around the same with ray tracing on. Even at 4K, the Nvidia cards lose in terms of rasterization performance and barely win when using ray tracing, having higher averages but lower one percent lows.

Upscaling Performance 🔍

God of War

At 1440p Native, both AMD cards are faster than the RTX 4080, but only slightly faster when using FSR or the LSS, as all of them run into a CPU bottleneck. Interestingly, at 1440p Ultra-wide when using the native resolution, the RX 7900 XTX is 17% faster than the RTX 4080, but when using FSR or the LSS, the difference decreases to only 6%, making it seem like the RTX 4080 is better in terms of upscaling technologies.

Spider-Man Remastered

To confirm that, we have the final test with Spider-Man Remastered at 4K. The first thing we can Notice is that the RX 7900 XTX is the winner, leading with an 11% performance difference in FSR versus the LSS, while having virtually the same performance without it, apart from the one percent lows.

Conclusion: Choosing the Right GPU 🤔

After all these benchmarks, the conclusion is that in terms of rasterization, the RX 7900 XTX is the clear winner, delivering over 10% performance over the RTX 4080 at 1080p. Even the cheaper RX 7900 XT is mostly on par or very close to the RTX 4080, costing $300-$400 less. At 1440p and 4K, the performance difference is at most 10%, so for 10% less performance, you can get a card $400 cheaper and still have 90% of the RTX 4080's performance with around the same power draw.

In terms of ray tracing, the RTX 4080 is much faster overall in ray tracing-heavy games like Metro Exodus and Cyberpunk 2077. However, in some outliers like Resident Evil 4, the 7900 XTX is actually faster than the RTX 4080 even when using ray tr
