Ideal Users

Open source community managers and maintainers looking to increase contributor engagement.
Developers seeking structured, high-value contribution opportunities.
Technical content creators who want to build a relevant, automated newsletter.
Anyone interested in leveraging an n8n workflow for complex data processing and AI agent orchestration.

Overview

Maintaining a healthy open-source repository requires actively guiding new contributors to manageable tasks. Manually sifting through hundreds of issues is time-consuming. This specialized n8n workflow solves this problem by deploying multiple AI agents to analyze GitHub data.

It first collects raw issue and release information, then uses an AI agent (IssueRank Agent) to determine which issues offer the best contribution potential based on detailed criteria (like documentation quality and maintainer confirmation). The chosen top issues are then sent to a second, sophisticated AI agent (Deepwiki Agent) that uses an external knowledge tool (Deepwiki MCP) to provide in-depth details: root cause analysis, resolution approaches, and technical difficulty levels. Finally, the n8n automation converts this enriched data into a polished HTML email newsletter, ready for delivery via the Send email n8n node. This approach provides targeted, high-value contribution suggestions automatically.

How it Works

The entire process is orchestrated through a sophisticated n8n workflow structure:

  1. Trigger and Initialization: The n8n trigger starts the process (currently manual, but easily replaced by a Schedule n8n trigger). The Load Repo Info n8n node defines the target repository (e.g., vercel/next.js).

  2. Data Retrieval: The Get Issue From Github GraphQL n8n node pulls the latest open issues (up to 10) and recent release notes from GitHub.

  3. Initial Ranking: The data is fed into the IssueRank Agent (an AI n8n node), which processes the issues based on complex contribution suitability criteria defined in the system prompt. It outputs a structured list of ranked issues.

  4. Filtering: The get Top Fit Issues n8n node filters this list, keeping only the top 3 highest-ranking issues.

  5. Title Generation: The Title Generator Agent creates a catchy, emoji-prefixed subject line for the final newsletter using an LLM.

  6. Deep Analysis: The top issues are split (Split Out) and individually processed by the Deepwiki Agent. This n8n agent utilizes the Deepwiki MCP tool to perform root cause analysis, determine resolution steps, and assess technical difficulty, turning basic issues into detailed contribution guides.

  7. Data Integration: The processed, enriched issues are recombined using Merge and Merge1 n8n nodes.

  8. HTML Generation: The convert HTML code n8n node dynamically generates the full, professional HTML body of the newsletter, incorporating all release notes and detailed issue analysis.

  9. Delivery: The final Send email n8n node uses the generated HTML and subject line to distribute the highly curated content.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the Workflow: Copy the provided JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. GitHub Credentials: Set up credentials for the Get Issue From Github n8n node. This typically requires a GitHub Personal Access Token (PAT).

  3. AI Model Credentials: This n8n workflow utilizes OpenRouter. You must create an OpenRouter API key and configure it for all LangChain AI nodes (IssueRank Main Model, IssueRank Fallback Model, Deepwiki Main Model, etc.).

  4. Email Setup: Configure the Send email n8n node using a service like Gmail (using an App Password for security) or SMTP credentials.

* Crucial Step: Update the Load Repo Info code n8n node with the owner and name of your target GitHub repository (e.g., owner: "vercel", name: "next.js").

  1. Trigger Configuration: Replace the manual When clicking ‘Execute workflow’ n8n trigger with a Schedule n8n trigger if you desire periodic execution (e.g., weekly delivery).

Node Details

This n8n workflow relies on a complex chain of specialized n8n nodes:

When clicking ‘Execute workflow’ (n8n trigger): Initiates the automation manually. Should be replaced by a Schedule n8n node for production.
Get Issue From Github (GraphQL n8n node): Fetches structured repository data, including latest releases and the top 10 open issues.
IssueRank Agent (AI Agent n8n node): The first specialized AI n8n node. It analyzes the raw GitHub data to rank issues based on criteria for good contribution opportunities, utilizing sophisticated LLM logic.
IssueRank Structured Output Parser (n8n node): Ensures the AI agent's YAML output conforms to a strict JSON schema, critical for reliability in an n8n workflow.
get Top Fit Issues (Code n8n node): A core logic n8n node that sorts the issues by the AI's suitability ranking ('high', 'medium', 'low') and selects the three best results.
Split Out (n8n node): Splits the array of top issues so that each is processed individually by the Deepwiki Agent for parallel, detailed analysis.
Deepwiki Agent (AI Agent n8n node with Tool): A powerful n8n node that uses the external Deepwiki MCP tool to research the root cause, resolution, and difficulty of each issue, creating a comprehensive contribution guide.
convert HTML (Code n8n node): This custom n8n node uses JavaScript to meticulously construct the final HTML template for the email, embedding all AI-generated content and formatting it professionally.

  • Send email (Email Send n8n node): The final action n8n node, sending the structured, AI-curated newsletter to the specified recipients.
