Who is this best for?

  • Compliance and Governance, Risk, and Compliance (GRC) specialists.

  • Audit teams needing to automate control status verification.

  • Organizations handling large volumes of PCI DSS compliance data.

  • Users looking for advanced examples of data transformation using the n8n node architecture.

Overview

Managing compliance for standards like PCI DSS requires meticulous data comparison between official requirements and collected client responses. This highly structured n8n workflow template solves the tedious manual effort of cross-referencing these data sets.

The automation begins by pulling both the master control list and client compliance inputs from Google Sheets (or a defined code block). It uses advanced core logic flow control n8n node operations, including Set nodes for ID normalization and Merge nodes for accurate data joining. Finally, it calculates aggregated compliance statistics (Match Status Count Per Client) and writes the audit summary back to Google Sheets, providing an efficient, auditable, and repeatable automated process. This is a robust example of how an n8n workflow can manage complex compliance data pipelines.

How it Works

This n8n workflow operates through a precise sequence of data preparation, matching, filtering, and aggregation:

  1. Trigger and Data Ingestion: The process starts with a Manual n8n trigger. This immediately executes two parallel branches: one retrieves client PCI responses from a Google Sheets n8n node, and the other defines the official list of controls using an n8n code node.

  2. Data Normalization: Multiple Set n8n nodes (Normalize Client ID, Normalize Control ID, Rename Official ID, Rename Client ID) are used in both parallel paths to ensure key identifiers are consistently formatted for matching.

  3. Data Unification: A Merge n8n node combines the normalized official controls list (Master) with the normalized client responses (Item 1, based on Control ID match).

  4. Evaluation and Filtering: The merged data is processed through an Edit Fields n8n node, followed by a Filter node, which narrows the dataset based on specific evaluation criteria. An If n8n node then splits the flow based on whether a compliance condition is met.

  5. Status Assignment: The two resulting paths (Edit Fields1 and Edit Fields2) assign distinct status flags (e.g., Compliant/Non-Compliant) based on the If decision.

  6. Final Aggregation: The modified items are merged again (Merge1). Subsequent Code n8n nodes (Code, Group By Client, Match Status Count Per Client) perform advanced scripting to group all items by client and tally the total count for each compliance status.

  7. Reporting: The final aggregated compliance report is written back to a designated spreadsheet using the final Google Sheets n8n node, completing the automated n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the Workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it directly into your n8n canvas using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. Google Sheets Credentials: You must provide credentials for the Google Sheets n8n nodes. Click on the 'ClientPCIResponses' and the final 'Google Sheets' node and connect your Google Sheets account using OAuth2 or Service Account access.

  3. Configure Spreadsheets: Update the Spreadsheet ID and Sheet Name parameters within both Google Sheets n8n node instances to point to your actual client response data and your desired output report sheet.

  4. Review Code Nodes: Examine the logic in the controls n8n node to ensure the master list of PCI controls matches your organization's requirements. Also, review the Group By Client and Match Status Count Per Client n8n node scripts if modifications to aggregation logic are needed.

  5. Execution: Once configured, activate the n8n workflow and click 'Execute Workflow' on the manual n8n trigger to run the evaluation.

Node Details

When clicking ‘Execute workflow’ (Manual Trigger n8n trigger): Initiates the entire evaluation process upon demand.
ClientPCIResponses (Google Sheets n8n node): Reads the raw compliance responses provided by the client, which typically includes Control ID and status fields.
controls (Code n8n node): Defines the authoritative list of PCI controls and their metadata. This is used as the base dataset for comparison.
Normalize Client ID / Normalize Control ID (Set n8n node): Essential for data hygiene. These nodes standardize the format of client and control identifiers to ensure accurate matching in the subsequent Merge operation.
Merge (Merge n8n node): The core junction point. It joins the client responses with the official controls list, keying off the normalized Control ID.
If (If n8n node): Checks if the merged client response meets the compliance requirement defined in the workflow logic. The flow splits based on this compliance test.
Match Status Count Per Client (Code n8n node): Performs complex aggregation logic. This script iterates through the evaluated data, groups the results by Client ID, and tallies how many controls matched, how many failed, or how many are pending evaluation.
Google Sheets (Google Sheets n8n node): The final action. It writes the structured compliance summary report, including the aggregated counts, back to a specified spreadsheet.
