Users looking for powerful examples of the Date & Time n8n node and the Scheduled n8n trigger.

Overview

Managing global teams or synchronized services across timezones is complicated by Daylight Saving Time (DST) shifts. This automated n8n workflow solves this problem by proactively checking if a defined timezone will enter or exit DST overnight. By deploying this specific n8n templates solution, you ensure that relevant stakeholders are notified the day before the change via both Slack and email. This high-utility n8n workflow utilizes core logic n8n node types to accurately calculate DST status for multiple timezones listed in a Code n8n node, providing a robust solution for international coordination. This powerful n8n workflow ensures timely alerts, preventing meeting clashes and operational mishaps caused by time shifts.

How it Works

  1. Trigger Execution: The n8n trigger, specifically the Schedule Trigger, initiates the n8n workflow daily (this schedule can be customized). It also includes a Manual Trigger for easy testing of the n8n node logic.

  2. Define Timezones: A Code n8n node, labeled "Timezones List," provides a hardcoded list of timezones (e.g., "America/NewYork") that the subsequent n8n node steps will iterate through.

  3. Calculate Dates: The first Set n8n node calculates the current date/time adjusted to the specific timezone. This is immediately followed by the Date & Time n8n node, which calculates the exact time for tomorrow in that same timezone.

  4. Check DST Status: Another Set n8n node checks two crucial values using moment.js expressions: whether the current date is in DST (datetimezonedst) and whether tomorrow's date is in DST (datetimezonetomorrowdst) for that specific timezone.

  5. Flow Control: The critical If n8n node, "Check If Change Tomorrow," compares these two boolean values. If they are not equal (meaning a change is occurring), the n8n workflow proceeds down the true path.

  6. Notify Stakeholders: If a DST change is confirmed for tomorrow, the n8n workflow executes the parallel notification steps. A Slack n8n node sends an instant message alert, and an Email Send n8n node sends a detailed notice, both dynamically inserting the affected timezone name using data passed through the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and import it directly into your n8n instance.

  2. Configure Timezones: Edit the Timezones List Code n8n node and update the array of objects (timezone) to include all timezones relevant to your operations.

  3. Setup Credentials:

Slack: Configure a Slack OAuth2 API credential and select the target channel within the Send Notification On Upcoming Change Slack n8n node.
Email: Configure an SMTP credential for the Send Email On Upcoming Change n8n node. Update the recipient email addresses as needed.

  1. Set Schedule: Configure the Schedule Trigger n8n trigger to run daily at a time convenient for advance notification.

  2. Activate: Ensure the n8n workflow is activated to begin daily checks.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): Initiates the n8n workflow automatically based on a predefined time rule.
Timezones List (Code n8n node): Defines the list of timezones to be monitored. Key Configuration: Contains the array of timezone strings.
Calculate Zone Date and Time (Set n8n node): Calculates the current time specific to the iterated timezone using {{ $now.setZone( $json.timezone ) }}.
Calculate Tomorrow's Date (Date & Time n8n node): Adds one day to the current timezone date, storing it as datetimezonetomorrow.
Check If Daylight Saving Time (Set n8n node): Determines the DST status for both today and tomorrow using the .isInDST function within the n8n node expressions. This is a critical step for the n8n workflow logic.
Check If Change Tomorrow (If n8n node): The flow control n8n node that checks if the DST status today is different from the DST status tomorrow, filtering the data items that require notification.
Send Notification On Upcoming Change (Slack n8n node): Sends a Slack message containing the timezone information if a change is imminent. Requires Slack OAuth2 configuration.
Send Email On Upcoming Change (Email Send n8n node): Sends an email alert confirming the DST change. Requires SMTP credentials setup.
