Overview

This robust n8n workflow provides a comprehensive solution for monitoring software repositories published on GitHub. Instead of manually reviewing release notes, this automation uses an n8n trigger to check configured repositories on a schedule. The key value proposition is the use of the Gemini AI model via the n8n node ecosystem to perform advanced filtering, categorization (features, fixes, others), and highly specific language conversion, translating English release details into structured Chinese summaries.

By incorporating Redis for caching, the n8n workflow ensures that each new release is processed only once, preventing duplicate notifications. The final output is delivered as a richly formatted Slack message, turning complex release data into immediate, actionable team alerts. This sophisticated combination of caching, AI processing, and flow control makes it one of the most powerful n8n templates available for DevOps and monitoring.

How it Works

The process is initiated by a Cron Trigger n8n node, which runs periodically.

  1. Configuration Check: The n8n workflow first reads a defined list of GitHub repositories from a Code n8n node.

  2. Repository Iteration: A Loop n8n node iterates through each repository specified in the configuration.

  3. Data Fetching: The RSS for Release n8n node attempts to retrieve the latest releases feed. Errors during fetching are routed to the Send Error Slack n8n node for immediate alerting.

  4. Cache Verification: The workflow limits the input to the newest release and uses a Redis Get n8n node to fetch the stored ID of the last known processed release. An If n8n node checks if the current release ID is new.

  5. AI Processing & Translation: If the release is new, the release notes (contentSnippet) are passed through the Gemini language model n8n node and processed by the Information Extractor n8n node. This extractor uses a detailed system prompt to summarize, categorize changes, and translate the content into Chinese.

  6. Formatting and Alerting: The Date Format n8n node standardizes the release date. A subsequent Code n8n node generates a complex Slack Block Kit JSON payload, integrating the translated categories, metadata, and links.

  7. Final Action: The Send Message Slack n8n node posts the formatted alert to the designated channel. The n8n workflow concludes by updating the Redis cache using the Redis Set Id n8n node with the new release ID, ensuring the n8n trigger doesn't re-process it.

Installation Guide

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and import it directly into your n8n instance as a new n8n workflow.

  2. Credentials Setup: Configure the following credentials:

Google Gemini / Google AI: Set up credentials for the Gemini n8n node (used by the Information Extractor).
Slack: Configure API credentials for the Slack n8n nodes (Send Message and Send Error).
Redis: Configure your Redis service credentials for the Redis n8n nodes (Redis Get and Redis Set Id).

  1. Workflow Configuration:

GitHub Repositories: Edit the GitHub Config Code n8n node to modify the list of repositories you wish to monitor (use the format owner/repo).
* Slack Channels: Update the Channel ID parameter in both the Send Message and Send Error Slack n8n nodes to point to your desired notification channel.

  1. Activation: Activate the n8n workflow to start the scheduled monitoring using the Cron Trigger.

Node Details

Cron Trigger: The scheduled n8n trigger. Configured to check every 10 minutes between 9 AM and 11 PM daily.
GitHub Config (Code): Contains the JavaScript array defining the list of repositories to be tracked by this n8n workflow.
RSS for Release: Fetches the Atom feed (releases.atom) for the GitHub repository specified in the current loop item.
If No Error: Determines if the RSS feed retrieval was successful or if an error message should be sent via the Slack n8n node (Send Error).
Redis Get / If New: Fetches the last processed ID from Redis and uses an If n8n node to check if the current release is genuinely new (ID does not equal cache).
Gemini (LM Chat Google Gemini): The AI model used to power the text processing capability of the n8n workflow.
Information Extractor: Takes the release notes (contentSnippet) and uses a specialized system prompt to extract categorized changes and translate them into Chinese.
Code for Slack Tpl (Code node): A highly customized script that transforms the categorized AI output and release metadata into a structured Slack Block Kit message payload.
Send Message (Slack node): The final action n8n node, sending the translated, formatted release notification to the specified Slack channel.
Redis Set Id: Saves the ID of the successfully processed new release to the Redis cache, ensuring persistence across subsequent runs of the n8n trigger.
