  • Technical Leaders: Anyone seeking to leverage the n8n platform to automate knowledge acquisition and distribution.

Overview

Keeping up with the rapid pace of research, especially in fields like AI and machine learning, is challenging. This powerful n8n workflow solves this by creating an automated intelligence gathering system. It uses robust web scraping techniques to fetch recent papers from Hugging Face, employs Notion for smart deduplication (ensuring you only process new content), and utilizes the OpenAI n8n node to generate concise summaries and classifications for each paper's abstract. The final, categorized data is then stored efficiently in a Notion database and immediately broadcast via Slack, ensuring your team receives timely updates. This complete n8n template saves significant time and ensures no important paper is missed.

How it Works

The entire process is initiated by the Schedule Trigger, the primary n8n trigger set to run at regular intervals.

  1. Initial Fetch: The workflow starts by executing an HTTP Request to fetch the main listing page of Hugging Face papers.

  2. Initial Parse: The subsequent HTML n8n node extracts the URLs and titles of the available papers.

  3. Iteration & Deduplication: The items are split out and looped over individually. For each paper, a Notion n8n node checks if the URL already exists in the target database.

  4. Conditional Processing: An If n8n node directs the flow. If the paper is new (not found in Notion), the workflow proceeds to fetch the detailed page.

  5. Detail Extraction: A second HTTP Request fetches the specific paper page, and another HTML n8n node extracts the full abstract text.

  6. AI Analysis: The crucial step involves the OpenAI n8n node, which takes the extracted abstract and performs summarization, classification, or keyword extraction based on the configured prompt.

  7. Data Storage: The results (original details, abstract, and AI analysis) are saved to Notion via the Store Abstract Notion n8n node.

  8. Notification: Simultaneously, the summarized result is sent immediately to a designated Slack channel using the Slack n8n node, alerting the team to the new research.

Installation Guide

To install and utilize this high-value n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON code and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'Import Workflow' option.

  2. Credentials Setup:

Notion: You will need to configure two separate Notion credentials—one for checking existing papers and one for storing the final results. Ensure the Notion integration has access to your target research database.
OpenAI: Set up your OpenAI credential with your API key, necessary for the analysis n8n node.
Slack: Configure a Slack credential (typically a Webhook or Bot) linked to the channel where you want notifications posted.

  1. Configuration:

HTTP Request Nodes: Review the URL configuration in the 'Request Hugging Face Paper' n8n node to ensure it targets the correct paper listing endpoint.
HTML Extraction Nodes: Customize the CSS selectors in the 'Extract Hugging Face Paper' and 'Extract Hugging Face Paper Abstract' n8n nodes if the target website structure changes.
OpenAI Analysis: Fine-tune the prompt within the 'OpenAI Analysis Abstract' n8n node to specify the desired output format (e.g., summarize in 3 bullet points, classify into one of 5 categories).

  1. Activation: Once all credentials and parameters are set, activate the n8n workflow to let the schedule n8n trigger take over.

Node Details

Schedule Trigger (n8n trigger): Initiates the entire n8n workflow based on a predefined schedule (e.g., daily or hourly).
Request Hugging Face Paper (HTTP Request n8n node): Fetches the HTML content of the target Hugging Face page listing recent research papers.
Extract Hugging Face Paper (HTML n8n node): Uses CSS selectors (or XPath) to parse the initial list of papers and extract key data points, like the unique URL for each paper.
Check Paper URL Existed (Notion n8n node): Queries a specific Notion database to check for the existence of the paper's URL, acting as the workflow's built-in deduplication mechanism.
If (n8n node): A core logic component that conditionally executes the detail fetching steps only if the paper is confirmed to be new.
OpenAI Analysis Abstract (OpenAI n8n node): Submits the extracted abstract to OpenAI's API for intelligent processing, resulting in categorized and summarized output.
Store Abstract Notion (Notion n8n node): Writes the paper details, the AI summary, and the extracted data into the designated Notion database page.
Send Analysis Result Slack (Slack n8n node): Sends a formatted message containing the title and AI-generated summary to a specified Slack channel.
