n8n power users seeking advanced examples of file handling and custom binary execution within an n8n node.
Anyone needing robust, self-hosted video processing solutions using an n8n trigger.

Overview

Managing high-volume video uploads often requires immediate processing, such as generating preview thumbnails. Manually scripting this process, or relying on expensive cloud services, can be complex and costly. This sophisticated n8n workflow provides a robust, self-contained solution for media handling.

This n8n template solves the dependency issue by including smart logic within an n8n node that automatically detects and, if necessary, downloads and installs a static build of FFmpeg directly into the container's temporary directory, ensuring the execution environment is always ready for processing. Once the thumbnail is generated, this n8n automation securely uploads the image to Google Drive and returns the metadata back to the client via the initial webhook connection, making it a professional-grade API endpoint.

How it Works

This n8n workflow initiates when a user sends a video file via an HTTP POST request to the Webhook path /mediaUpload. This initial n8n trigger is configured to defer its response until the entire process is complete.

  1. Validation: The video binary data (media) is passed to the 'Validate Upload is Video (IF)' n8n node, which verifies that the file’s MIME type contains video/.

  2. File Persistence: Valid video files proceed to the 'Persist Upload to /tmp' n8n node, which writes the incoming binary stream to disk (in /tmp) to create a stable file path readable by FFmpeg.

  3. FFmpeg Execution: The 'Extract Thumbnail with FFmpeg (Auto-Install) (Execute Command)' n8n node executes a complex shell script. This script first checks if FFmpeg is installed. If not, it dynamically downloads the appropriate static FFmpeg binary based on the host architecture (e.g., AMD64 or ARM64) and saves it to /tmp. It then runs the FFmpeg command, capturing a single frame at the 5-second mark (-ss 5), saving the thumbnail as a JPEG.

  4. Data Loading: The 'Load Thumbnail from Disk' n8n node reads the newly created JPEG thumbnail file back into the n8n item’s binary data stream.

  5. Cloud Storage: The 'Upload Thumbnail to Drive (Google Drive)' n8n node uses the thumbnail binary data to create a new file in the configured Google Drive folder, returning detailed file metadata.

  6. Response: Finally, the 'Return API Response (Respond to Webhook)' n8n node sends a formatted JSON response containing the success status and crucial Google Drive metadata (like the thumbnail’s ID and download URL) back to the original client that activated the n8n trigger.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and import it into your self-hosted or cloud n8n instance.

  2. Credentials: Configure the Google Drive n8n node. You will need to set up OAuth2 credentials allowing n8n access to your Drive account. Ensure the account has permission to write to the target folder.

  3. Folder ID: In the 'Upload Thumbnail to Drive' n8n node, update the Folder ID parameter to point to the specific Google Drive folder where thumbnails should be saved.

  4. Activate: Save the n8n workflow and toggle the status to 'Active'.

  5. Test: Use an API client (like Postman or cURL) to send an HTTP POST request containing a video file (using multipart/form-data) to your exposed n8n webhook URL (e.g., https://your.n8n.instance/webhook/mediaUpload).

Node Details

Accept Video Upload (Webhook) (n8n trigger):
Function: Serves as the initiation point, listening for HTTP POST requests at /mediaUpload expecting a video file in multipart/form-data format.
Key Configuration: Response Mode: Respond with data from the last node (Essential for returning Drive metadata).
Validate Upload is Video (IF) (n8n node):
Function: Filters items, ensuring only inputs with a MIME type containing video/ proceed down the true branch.
Persist Upload to /tmp (Write Binary File) (n8n node):
Function: Saves the video file temporarily to the /tmp directory on the host machine, providing a stable path for the FFmpeg command.
Extract Thumbnail with FFmpeg (Auto-Install) (Execute Command) (n8n node):
Function: Executes shell commands to either locate an existing FFmpeg binary or automatically fetch and set up a static FFmpeg binary into /tmp before running the extraction command (-ss 5 -frames:v 1). This is the core logic of this n8n template.
Load Thumbnail from Disk (Read Binary File) (n8n node):
Function: Reads the newly created JPEG thumbnail back into the n8n workflow memory, making it available as binary data for the next n8n node.
Upload Thumbnail to Drive (Google Drive) (n8n node):
Function: Uploads the thumbnail binary data to the designated Google Drive folder.
Return API Response (Respond to Webhook) (n8n node):
* Function: Formats and returns a clean JSON response to the original API caller, utilizing the file metadata generated by the Google Drive n8n node.
