  • Data analysts who require clean input for reporting.

  • n8n users looking for advanced examples of scheduled, API-polling n8n templates.

Overview

Manually logging and analyzing LinkedIn connection data is time-consuming and prone to errors. This robust n8n workflow provides a zero-touch solution for regularly capturing your network growth.

Built as a sophisticated automation, this n8n workflow leverages a scheduled n8n trigger to initiate an external scraping service (e.g., Apify). It incorporates essential flow control—waiting for the scraping job to complete and retrying if necessary—ensuring data completeness. Once successful, the data is transformed using the n8n node code functions and reliably stored in Google Sheets, overwriting older data for a fresh snapshot. This type of high-utility n8n automation is perfect for setting up reliable, recurring business intelligence feeds.

How it Works

This automation is initiated by a scheduled n8n trigger set to run every Sunday at 2 AM.

  1. Start Scrape: The workflow begins with the Weekly Sync (Sunday 2AM) n8n trigger. The Start LinkedIn Scrape n8n node then sends an HTTP request to an external scraping API to start the data collection job.

  2. Extract & Wait: The immediate API response, which contains the unique Run ID, is parsed by the Extract Run ID code n8n node. The workflow then pauses for 30 seconds using the Wait for Scrape (30s) n8n node.

  3. Status Check Loop: The Check Scrape Status n8n node repeatedly queries the scraping API using the extracted Run ID.

  4. Conditional Logic: The Scrape Completed? n8n node (an If node) checks the status.

If True: It proceeds to Get Scraped Data via another HTTP request.
If False: It hits the Wait & Retry (60s) n8n node, pauses for 60 seconds, and loops back to check the status again until the job is complete.

  1. Data Processing and Storage: Once the data is retrieved, the Process Connections Data n8n node cleans and formats the information. The workflow then executes two parallel Google Sheets n8n node operations: Clear Existing Data (clearing the previous week's report) and Save Connections to Sheets (writing the new connections list).

  2. Summary Generation: Finally, the Generate Sync Summary n8n node calculates metrics from the saved data, ready for an optional notification step (not explicitly defined but implied by the summary generation n8n node). This highly structured n8n workflow is a great example of advanced n8n templates.

Installation Guide

To install and utilize this complex n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the entire JSON code and paste it into your n8n canvas using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Credentials: You will need to configure credentials for the following services:

Google Sheets: Ensure the Clear Existing Data and Save Connections to Sheets n8n node operations have access to your target spreadsheet.
HTTP Request (Scraping API): You must configure the Start LinkedIn Scrape and related n8n node requests with your specific API key and endpoint (e.g., for Apify) to successfully start and retrieve the scraping job.

  1. Configuration: Update the scheduled time in the Weekly Sync (Sunday 2AM) n8n trigger if a different sync frequency is desired.

  2. Code Node Review: Review the Extract Run ID, Process Connections Data, and Generate Sync Summary n8n node configurations to ensure the data parsing logic matches the exact output structure of your chosen scraping tool.

Node Details

Weekly Sync (Sunday 2AM) (Cron n8n trigger): This is the core n8n trigger, initiating the entire n8n workflow automatically every Sunday.
Start LinkedIn Scrape (HTTP Request n8n node): Sends the initial request to the external scraping service API to start the data extraction job. Must contain authentication headers.
Extract Run ID (Code n8n node): Essential for flow control. This n8n node parses the JSON response from the scrape initiation request to extract the unique ID required for subsequent status checks.
Wait for Scrape (30s) (Wait n8n node): Introduces a necessary initial delay before starting the polling loop.
Scrape Completed? (If n8n node): Provides conditional routing. It checks the API response status to determine if the scraping job is finished, controlling whether the workflow proceeds or waits and retries.
Get Scraped Data (HTTP Request n8n node): Executes the final API call to download the completed, extracted LinkedIn connection data.
Process Connections Data (Code n8n node): This crucial n8n node transforms and normalizes the raw scraped JSON data into a clean, tabular format suitable for Google Sheets insertion.
Clear Existing Data / Save Connections to Sheets (Google Sheets n8n node): These n8n nodes handle the database synchronization, first deleting the previous week's data and then appending the new, clean dataset.
