Overview

Bridging language barriers in real-time communication platforms (like Telegram or Slack) is complex. This sophisticated n8n workflow solves this by acting as an automatic translation relay bot. Whenever a new message is posted via the initial n8n trigger, the system springs into action. It first uses an external AI service to instantly identify the source language, then determines the necessary target languages based on recipient preferences. The core of this n8n workflow utilizes multiple instances of the HTTP Request n8n node to interact with OpenAI's powerful GPT-3.5 model for high-quality, quick translation. The result is a seamless communication experience where every group member receives the original message translated into their specified preferred language. This is one of the most practical n8n templates for global collaboration.

How it Works

The process begins with the Webhook n8n trigger, which listens for incoming messages from a configured chat platform.

  1. Incoming Message: The Webhook - Incoming Message n8n node receives the raw payload.

  2. Data Extraction: A Code n8n node, Extract Message Data, parses the payload to isolate the message text, sender ID, and group ID.

  3. Language Detection: The Detect Language (OpenAI) HTTP Request n8n node sends the text to GPT-3.5, asking it to return only the ISO language code.

  4. Target Analysis: The Get Group Members & Languages Code n8n node (which currently contains placeholder logic for group members and preferences) determines which languages are needed for translation by filtering out the sender's language and compiling a unique list of recipient languages.

  5. Translation: The n8n workflow then iterates through the required target languages. For each language, the Translate Message (OpenAI) n8n node sends the message back to GPT-3.5 for precise translation.

  6. Recipient Splitting: After translation, the Split to Individual Recipients Code n8n node generates a separate item for every unique recipient, ensuring individual and personalized delivery.

  7. Delivery & Logging: Finally, the Send Translated Message n8n node (placeholder for a chat API) delivers the translated text, and the flow is concluded by logging the status and sending a success response via the Webhook Response n8n node to acknowledge the initial n8n trigger.

Installation Guide

To deploy this powerful n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided n8n workflow JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' > 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. Webhook Setup: Activate the Webhook - Incoming Message n8n trigger. Copy the generated test or production URL and configure it in your chat platform (e.g., Telegram Bot Webhook, Slack Event Subscription) to send messages to this path (/translate-relay).

  3. OpenAI Credential Configuration: The Detect Language and Translate Message n8n nodes use HTTP Requests requiring an API Key. Ensure you replace the placeholder setup with your valid OpenAI API key, typically passed via an Authorization Header (Bearer YOURAPIKEY).

  4. Customize Group Logic: The Get Group Members & Languages Code n8n node contains hardcoded member data. For production use, you must modify this Code n8n node to fetch real recipient language preferences from a database (like PostgreSQL, Supabase, or Google Sheets) based on the incoming groupId.

  5. Configure Delivery: Update the Send Translated Message HTTP Request n8n node with the actual API endpoint and required authentication for your chosen chat platform to ensure messages are correctly delivered to individual recipients.

Node Details

Webhook - Incoming Message (n8n trigger): The starting point of this n8n workflow. It uses the path /translate-relay and waits for a POST request, typically from a chat platform API, to initiate the translation process.
Extract Message Data (Code n8n node): Essential for parsing complex incoming JSON payloads. It extracts core variables like originalMessage, senderId, and groupId for use throughout the n8n workflow.
Detect Language (OpenAI) (HTTP Request n8n node): Sends the message to the OpenAI API (gpt-3.5-turbo) with a specific system prompt configured to return only the two-letter ISO language code, optimizing the subsequent steps in this n8n template.
Get Group Members & Languages (Code n8n node): This logic node determines the fan-out structure. It identifies the target languages required, filtering out the source language and the sender, ensuring efficient translation tasks are created for the next n8n node.
Translate Message (OpenAI) (HTTP Request n8n node): A critical n8n node responsible for the actual translation. It uses a professional translator system prompt and is dynamically fed the targetLanguage variable generated upstream in the n8n workflow.
Split to Individual Recipients (Code n8n node): This node takes the single translated result and duplicates the item for every individual recipient who speaks that language, preparing the data for parallel delivery via the final Send Translated Message n8n node.
