Overview

Keeping track of competitors' funding rounds, product updates, and key metrics published on platforms like Crunchbase is vital, but manual monitoring is time-consuming. This n8n workflow solves this by creating a structured automation pipeline.

Starting with a specific competitor name, the n8n node structure transforms the input, fetches the latest financial and operational data directly from the Crunchbase API, and immediately pushes this critical intelligence into your team's ClickUp dashboard. This ensures that every significant competitor update triggers a high-priority review task, maximizing the value of your business intelligence efforts. This robust n8n workflow demonstrates the power of integrating specialized APIs using a standard n8n installation.

How it Works

This powerful n8n workflow operates in two main sections: Preparation and Execution.

  1. Trigger and Input: The process starts with a Manual Trigger n8n trigger (which can be easily switched to a Schedule Trigger for recurrent checks). The Set Competitor Name n8n node defines the company to be tracked (e.g., 'OpenAI').

  2. Data Transformation: The Generate Crunchbase Slug n8n node, a custom Code n8n node, cleans and standardizes the competitor name (e.g., 'OpenAI' becomes 'openai'). This slug is mandatory for a successful Crunchbase API call.

  3. API Fetch: The Fetch Crunchbase Data HTTP Request n8n node uses the generated slug to query the Crunchbase API, retrieving up-to-date properties such as total funding, last funding type, and short description. Remember to provide your Crunchbase API key in this n8n node configuration.

  4. Task Creation: Finally, the Create Review Task in ClickUp n8n node dynamically generates a detailed task within a specified ClickUp space. The task description is populated using expressions that pull the newly acquired data (funding details, description, and update time) from the previous n8n node, immediately alerting the team for review.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow and utilize these n8n templates, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Download the provided JSON code and import it directly into your n8n instance.

  2. Crunchbase Credentials: Open the Fetch Crunchbase Data n8n node. You must replace the placeholder YOURAPIKEY in the Query Parameters with your actual Crunchbase API User Key.

  3. ClickUp Credentials: Set up your ClickUp Credentials. You will need to select an existing List and Space within the Create Review Task in ClickUp n8n node configuration.

  4. Competitor Setup: Open the Set Competitor Name n8n node and update the value in the 'Competitor' assignment to reflect the company you wish to track.

  5. Activation: For continuous tracking, replace the Manual Trigger n8n trigger with a Schedule Trigger n8n node and set your desired interval (e.g., run daily or weekly).

  6. Test: Execute the n8n workflow manually to ensure a task is correctly created in ClickUp.

Node Details

Manual Trigger (n8n trigger): The starting point for executing the n8n workflow during development and testing.
Set Competitor Name (Set n8n node): Manually defines the key input variable, Competitor, which is set to 'OpenAI' in this n8n templates example.
Generate Crunchbase Slug (Code n8n node): Essential custom scripting to convert the clean company name into the URL-safe slug required by the Crunchbase API. It ensures robust API integration for this n8n workflow.
Fetch Crunchbase Data (HTTP Request n8n node): Connects to the Crunchbase API (api.crunchbase.com) using the generated slug path and includes the required API key as a query parameter (userkey).

  • Create Review Task in ClickUp (ClickUp n8n node): The final action n8n node. It formats and creates a high-priority task, mapping multiple data points from the Crunchbase API response (e.g., data.properties.totalfundingusd and data.properties.homepageurl) into the task description. The task title is dynamically set to 'Review Crunchbase Update and inform your manager'.
