Who is this best for?

Cryptocurrency Researchers: Users needing automated access to real-time exchange data and asset holdings.
Fintech Developers: Those building specialized AI applications requiring robust market data retrieval.
n8n Automation Specialists: Individuals looking for advanced examples of using the LangChain Agent n8n node with multiple custom HTTP tools.
Market Analysts: Professionals focused on tracking crypto market sentiment via the Fear & Greed Index.

Overview

This digital asset intelligence agent solves the complexity of aggregating structured cryptocurrency data from multiple CoinMarketCap API endpoints. Instead of requiring the user to know the specific API paths or formats, the AI Agent node determines the correct sequence of actions based on a natural language query.

This specialized n8n workflow acts as a powerful module, allowing a main application (or supervisor n8n workflow) to query complex financial data using simple text commands. It is one of the most sophisticated n8n templates for financial market data, integrating a powerful conversational brain (GPT-4o Mini) with five custom n8n node tools that handle exchange mapping, metadata retrieval, asset holdings, the CMC 100 Index, and the crucial Fear and Greed Index.

How it Works

This automation functions as a sub-workflow, designed to be called by a larger supervisor n8n workflow or system.

  1. Trigger Reception (n8n trigger): The process begins with the 'When Executed by Another Workflow' n8n trigger, which accepts two critical inputs: message (the user's natural language query) and sessionId (for maintaining conversation context in memory).

  2. Agent Activation: The query is passed to the 'CoinMarketCap Exchange and Community Agent' n8n node, which uses the LangChain framework. This node has a detailed system message defining its capabilities (Exchange Map, Info, Assets, CMC 100, Fear & Greed).

  3. Brain and Memory: The agent connects to the 'Exchange and Community Agent Brain' (an OpenAI Chat LLM, GPT-4o Mini) and the 'Exchange and Community Agent Memory' (a Buffer Window) to process the message within context.

  4. Tool Selection: Based on the input message, the LLM determines which of the five specialized n8n node tools needs to be executed (e.g., if the user asks for 'Binance holdings,' the agent first uses the 'Exchange Map' tool to find Binance's ID, then uses the 'Exchange Assets' tool).

  5. Data Retrieval: The selected n8n node tool executes an HTTP request against the CoinMarketCap API using dedicated credentials (CoinMarketCap Standard).

  6. Final Response: The data returned by the tool is summarized and formatted by the LLM (the Brain) and returned as the final output of the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this expert n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. OpenAI Credential Setup:

Find the 'Exchange and Community Agent Brain' n8n node.
Set up or select your existing OpenAI API credential with access to GPT models (the template uses gpt-4o-mini).

  1. CoinMarketCap Credential Setup:

This n8n workflow relies on a generic HTTP Header Authentication credential named 'CoinMarketCap Standard'.
Set up this credential with your CoinMarketCap API Key in the header field (usually named X-CMCPROAPI_KEY).
* Ensure all five 'toolHttpRequest' n8n node tools are connected to this new credential.

  1. Activation: Save the n8n workflow and ensure it is activated (status set to 'Active'). Since this uses an 'Execute Workflow Trigger', it is ready to be called programmatically by another active n8n workflow.

Node Details

When Executed by Another Workflow (n8n trigger): The starting point of this modular process. It waits for an external signal, receiving the user's natural language query (message) and a context identifier (sessionId). This is essential for reusable n8n templates.
CoinMarketCap Exchange and Community Agent (Agent node): This core n8n node orchestrates the entire intelligence process. It is configured with a rich system message defining the agent's persona and tool usage hierarchy, crucial for complex AI automation.
Exchange and Community Agent Brain (OpenAI Chat n8n node): The Large Language Model (gpt-4o-mini) responsible for reasoning, tool selection, and summarizing the data retrieved by the tools into coherent answers.
Exchange and Community Agent Memory (Memory Buffer Window n8n node): Maintains the conversational history using the provided sessionId, allowing the agent to handle follow-up questions within the same context.
Exchange Map (ToolHttpRequest n8n node): Essential tool mapping exchange slugs to unique IDs (/v1/exchange/map). The agent prioritizes this n8n node when looking up exchange-specific information.
Exchange Info (ToolHttpRequest n8n node): Retrieves metadata (country, description, links) for a specific exchange ID.
Exchange Assets (ToolHttpRequest n8n node): Fetches detailed token holdings and wallet balances for an exchange, requiring a specific ID as input.
Fear and Greed Latest (ToolHttpRequest n8n node): Directly retrieves the latest crypto market sentiment index score, making this n8n workflow extremely valuable for market analysis.
