Who is this best for?

  • Business owners or finance teams needing a quick, controlled interface for issuing checks.

  • Users looking for ready-made n8n templates to handle API-based payment processing.

  • Developers who need a secure, internal tool built on an n8n trigger mechanism for financial transactions.

Overview

Managing check issuance can be tedious, often requiring manual entry or access to sensitive third-party systems. This specialized n8n workflow provides a secure and structured way to bridge your internal process with the OnlineCheckWriter platform. It utilizes n8n's Form capabilities to create a simple, two-step interface: first, for one-time API configuration, and second, for collecting specific payment details.

By leveraging this n8n template, you minimize friction and potential errors associated with manual data handling. The logic securely passes credentials and payment information to the OnlineCheckWriter API via an n8n node, automating the generation of digital checks and providing instant confirmation back to the user.

How it Works

This efficient process is managed by a sequence of specialized n8n nodes, ensuring both configuration security and data integrity.

  1. Configuration Trigger: The workflow begins with the OCW API Configuration n8n trigger (a Form Trigger node). This crucial first step collects your OnlineCheckWriter API Key and Bank Account ID, storing them securely for subsequent use in the n8n workflow.

  2. Data Collection: Next, the Check Details Form n8n node is executed. This interactive form collects all necessary check information, including Payee Name, address details, Amount, Memo, and Issue Date.

  3. API Execution: The data is then routed to the Send Check via OCW API n8n node (an HTTP Request node). This n8n node dynamically constructs a comprehensive JSON payload using information merged from both the configuration step (for the Account ID) and the details form (for payment data).

  4. Authentication: The request uses Bearer token authentication, inserting the stored API Key into the request header, ensuring secure communication with the OnlineCheckWriter API.

  5. Confirmation: Finally, the Success Response1 n8n node, a 'Respond to Webhook' n8n node, sends an immediate, customized confirmation message back to the user who submitted the form. This response confirms the successful check creation and provides key details like the generated Check ID and transaction status, completing the seamless n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu (Templates -> Import from JSON).

  2. Activate the Workflow: Ensure the n8n workflow is marked as 'Active' in the top-right corner.

  3. Initial Setup: Execute the first form trigger (OCW API Configuration) to input your sensitive credentials (API Key and Bank Account ID). These credentials will be securely saved within the n8n workflow context.

  4. Review the HTTP Node: Open the Send Check via OCW API n8n node. Note that this n8n node currently targets the OnlineCheckWriter test environment (https://test.onlinecheckwriter.com/...). If you wish to process live checks, you must update the URL to the production endpoint.

  5. Use the Form: Once configured, you can use the URL provided by the Check Details Form n8n node to start creating digital checks instantly.

Node Details

OCW API Configuration (n8n node: Form Trigger): This is the initial n8n trigger. It functions as a secure setup mechanism, collecting and saving the OnlineCheckWriter API Key and Bank Account ID, which are critical for the authentication step in the n8n workflow.
Check Details Form (n8n node: Form): A crucial interactive n8n node responsible for gathering all required payee and payment details (Amount, Payee Name, Address, Issue Date, etc.). All fields are validated before proceeding.
Send Check via OCW API (n8n node: HTTP Request): This powerful n8n node executes the core business logic. It combines inputs from both previous forms, dynamically constructs the payment JSON payload, and sends an authenticated POST request to the OnlineCheckWriter API to generate the digital check. Note the use of expression syntax to merge data across different n8n nodes.
Success Response1 (n8n node: Respond to Webhook): This final n8n node ensures a smooth user experience by returning a dynamic success message containing the newly created check's ID, amount, and status, confirming the completion of the n8n workflow.
