Overview

Maintaining a consistent, authoritative knowledge base is challenging due to constant manual research and validation. This professional n8n workflow solves that by automating the entire process of entity discovery, research, validation, and storage.

This sophisticated automation utilizes a multi-tool AI research agent, which intelligently consults a vector database (Qdrant), Wikipedia, and live web search to synthesize high-quality, structured entity profiles. Every successfully researched profile is validated for quality and completeness using a dedicated quality control AI and then stored, enabling continuous improvement of your knowledge base. This powerful n8n node combination ensures high data integrity and prevents duplicate research, saving time and API costs. This solution is a perfect example of advanced n8n workflow design for scalable knowledge management.

How it Works

The n8n workflow begins with an n8n trigger, either a manual execution or an invocation from another workflow, providing the entity name and context (topic, audience).

  1. Preparation and Initial Lookup: The Set Node prepares input variables. The workflow then executes an Entity Search (Qdrant n8n node), leveraging Ollama embeddings, to check if the entity already exists in the knowledge base.

  2. Duplicate Prevention: The Entity Search Successful condition checks the results. If the entity is found, the n8n workflow skips the resource-intensive research phase. If not found, it proceeds to research.

  3. AI Research Agent: The Entity Researcher Agent, powered by the OpenAI n8n node, acts as the core engine. It utilizes an internal vector search tool, Wikipedia, and a custom Internet Researcher sub-workflow to gather comprehensive data, ensuring the search queries use only the entity name.

  4. Structured Output: The output from the agent is processed by the Entity Parser to enforce a strict JSON schema for the entity profile (definition, type, examples, related entities).

  5. Quality Validation: The Validate Entity LLM Chain (using another OpenAI n8n node) acts as a quality gate, checking if the profile is complete, accurate, and suitable for the target audience. The Entity Defined condition only allows complete records to proceed.

  6. Final Duplication Check: A second Entity Search 2 checks the database using the now-validated entity name to ensure no recent or slightly differing entity was added during the research process.

  7. Storage: If unique, the data is chunked by the Character Text Splitter, prepared by the Default Data Loader (attaching metadata like type, category, and relevance), embedded using the Ollama n8n node, and finally stored in the Qdrant Vector Database via the Save Entity n8n node. This completion marks the successful run of the sophisticated n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this comprehensive n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it directly into your n8n instance via the 'Workflows' > 'New' > 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. Credential Setup: This workflow requires several external services. Click on the credential fields for the following n8n node types and connect your accounts:

OpenAI: Required for the main research and validation steps. The workflow is configured for o4-mini.
Qdrant: Required for storing and retrieving entity profiles. Ensure your API key and URL are correct.
* Ollama: Required for local embeddings (nomic-embed-text:latest). Ensure your Ollama instance is accessible to your n8n setup.

  1. Qdrant Collection: Verify that the 'entities' collection exists and is properly configured in your Qdrant instance, as referenced in multiple Qdrant n8n node parameters.

  2. Internet Researcher Sub-workflow: The Researcher Internet n8n node calls an external workflow (hRo7kt0ghoXmEv4G). You must ensure this sub-workflow is imported and published, or adjust the ID to match your resource.

  3. Execution: Use the manual n8n trigger to test by providing an entity name (e.g., 'API Gateway', 'GDPR', 'Darth Vader') along with context (topic, audience).

Node Details

This n8n workflow utilizes several specialized nodes:

When clicking ‘Execute workflow’ (Manual Trigger) / When Executed by Another Workflow (n8n trigger):
Function: Starts the n8n workflow, allowing manual testing or integration into larger systems.
Key Configuration: Accepts input parameters: entity, topic, audience, and purpose.
Set Node:
Function: Standardizes and initializes required input variables, including setting the target collectionname to 'entities'.
Entity Search (Qdrant Vector Store n8n node):
Function: Performs the initial RAG search to check for existing entity profiles in Qdrant before starting new research.
Key Configuration: Mode: load; Filter: Searches metadata.entity
name matching the input entity.
Entity Researcher (AI Agent n8n node):
Function: The primary research orchestration unit. It determines which tools (Internal Search, Wikipedia n8n node, Internet Researcher n8n node) to use to construct the structured profile.
Key Configuration: Uses OpenAI Chat Model2 (o4-mini). System message enforces specific research protocol and JSON-only output.
Validate Entity (LLM Chain n8n node):
Function: An AI quality control step. It uses a custom prompt to evaluate the completeness and accuracy of the generated entity profile.
Key Configuration: Uses OpenAI Chat Model4. Output is parsed by Validation Parser to return is_complete: true/false.
Entity Search 2 (Qdrant Vector Store n8n node):
Function: Performs a final check right before saving to ensure the researched entity name doesn't lead to a duplicate entry in the database.
Save Entity (Qdrant Vector Store n8n node):
Function: Stores the fully validated and structured entity profile into the Qdrant database for persistent knowledge.
* Key Configuration: Mode: insert; Uses Default Data Loader and Entity Embeddings (Ollama) to prepare the document and metadata for vector storage.
