Overview

Generating high-quality, emotionally resonant graphic content typically requires multiple steps: prompt engineering for text, image generation, and then manual design overlay. This sophisticated n8n workflow streamlines the entire process. It uses GPT-4o-mini to generate a powerful text prompt or caption based on a provided theme and scenario, enhancing emotional connection. This text is then combined with a base image prompt for Midjourney (via PiAPI) to create the artwork. Finally, the Canvas API is used to automatically layer the generated text onto the image, producing a polished, ready-to-use graphic wallpaper.

This robust n8n workflow provides a fantastic example of integrating specialized AI services and managing asynchronous tasks, making it a valuable addition to your library of n8n templates.

How it Works

This n8n workflow is initiated by a manual n8n trigger and executes the following steps:

  1. Parameter Definition: The flow starts with the Basic Params n8n node, where essential settings like the PiAPI key, creative theme, scenario, desired style, and the foundational image prompt are defined.

  2. Text Generation: The Gpt-4o-mini API n8n node sends the theme and style parameters to the LLM (via PiAPI) to generate a concise, emotionally impactful text output (showprompt).

  3. Prompt Assembly: The Get Prompt n8n node (a Code node) combines the LLM-generated text with the predefined image prompt, creating a single, optimized prompt for Midjourney.

  4. Midjourney Generation Request: The Midjourney Generator n8n node sends this combined prompt to the PiAPI endpoint, initiating the image generation task and receiving a taskid.

  5. Status Polling (Asynchronous Handling): The flow enters a waiting loop starting with the Wait for Midjourney Generation n8n node, followed by the Get Midjourney Task HTTP Request node, which polls the status using the task_id.

  6. Loop Control: The Determine Whether the Image URL was Fetched n8n node (If node) checks if the task status is 'completed' or 'failed'. If neither, the flow loops back to the Wait node to continue polling, demonstrating essential asynchronous handling in an n8n workflow.

  7. Success Check: Once the task finishes, the Check Image Generation Status n8n node (Switch node) confirms the status is 'completed'.

  8. URL Extraction: The Get Image Url n8n node extracts the temporary image URL provided by the Midjourney output.

  9. Final Composition: The Design in Canvas n8n node sends the extracted image URL and the original GPT-generated text to the Canvas API, instructing it to overlay the text onto the image using a predefined template (social-3-1), thereby completing the graphic wallpaper.

Installation Guide

To use this n8n template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and import it into your n8n instance using the 'Import Workflow' option.

  2. PiAPI Key Setup: Locate the Basic Params n8n node and input your PiAPI key in the x-api-key field. This key is used for both the GPT-4o-mini and Midjourney steps.

  3. Canvas API Key (Optional Update): The Design in Canvas n8n node currently contains a hardcoded API key (in the X-API-Key header). For production use, you should replace this with your own Canvas API key and potentially move it to an n8n credential store for better security.

  4. Review and Customize: Adjust the theme, scenario, and image_prompt values in the Basic Params n8n node to tailor the output to your creative needs. Review the prompt used in the Gpt-4o-mini API HTTP Request node for customization.

  5. Execution: Click the 'Test workflow' n8n trigger node to initiate the automation.

Node Details

This advanced n8n workflow relies on a mixture of core n8n nodes and HTTP Request nodes for powerful external API integration.

When clicking Test workflow (Manual Trigger n8n trigger): Initiates the entire automation process, perfect for testing or one-off executions of this n8n workflow.
Basic Params (Set n8n node): Serves as the configuration hub, defining the API key and all creative parameters (theme, style, prompts) used by downstream n8n nodes.
Gpt-4o-mini API (HTTP Request n8n node): Sends the creative parameters to the GPT-4o-mini model via PiAPI to generate the text copy for the wallpaper. Uses a Bearer token for authorization.
Get Prompt (Code n8n node): Executes custom JavaScript to dynamically merge the generated text copy (showprompt) with the static imageprompt, resulting in the final input for Midjourney.
Midjourney Generator (HTTP Request n8n node): Sends the complex combined prompt to the Midjourney API to start the image generation. This is a crucial n8n node for the image aspect.
Wait for Midjourney Generation (Wait n8n node): Pauses the execution flow, necessary before checking the status of the asynchronous Midjourney task.
Determine Whether the Image URL was Fetched (If n8n node): Implements flow control logic. It checks if the generation status is 'completed' or 'failed', controlling the polling loop logic of this n8n workflow.
Design in Canvas (HTTP Request n8n node): The final output n8n node. It accepts the Midjourney image URL and the GPT-generated text to composite the final graphic based on a pre-selected Canvas template.
