Who is this best for?

AI Automation developers building multi-step, intelligent n8n templates.
Users looking to expose secure API functions to large language models (LLMs) via an n8n trigger.
Organizations needing automated, AI-driven CRM integration with Google Contacts.
Developers wanting to utilize the Multi-Chain Prompt (MCP) capabilities within n8n.

Overview

This powerful n8n workflow template solves the challenge of securely integrating AI Agents with critical cloud services like Google Contacts. By structuring five specific contact management operations—Create, Read, Update, Delete (CRUD)—as callable tools using the specialized n8n trigger (MCP Server), this n8n workflow enables intelligent automation. The AI Agent can analyze a user request (e.g., 'Add John Doe to my contacts') and autonomously select the corresponding n8n node ('Create a contact') to execute the task. This modular design makes the n8n node setup highly reliable and scalable for sophisticated contact management routines.

How it Works

The entire process begins with the Google Contacts Tool MCP Server n8n trigger node. This specialized n8n trigger is designed specifically for AI Agent communication, waiting for a prompt and required tool usage from an upstream LLM.

  1. Trigger Activation: An external AI Agent determines that it needs to manipulate a Google Contact based on its prompt analysis and calls this n8n workflow as a tool.

  2. Tool Routing: The n8n trigger receives the invocation, along with the specific parameters (e.g., the contact's name, email, and the desired operation).

  3. Operation Execution: The n8n trigger is connected to five separate Google Contacts Tool n8n node instances. The AI Agent's call automatically routes execution to the correct n8n node:

Create a contact
Delete a contact
Get a contact
Get many contacts
* Update a contact

  1. Result Return: The selected n8n node performs its action on Google Contacts. The output (success confirmation, contact data, or an error) is then returned through the MCP server mechanism back to the calling AI Agent for contextual response generation. This efficient n8n workflow setup ensures seamless integration between AI logic and cloud APIs.

Installation Guide

To install this n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the JSON: Copy the provided JSON code and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Configure Credentials: Each Google Contacts Tool n8n node requires valid Google Contacts credentials. Click on any of the Google Contacts Tool n8n nodes, navigate to the Credentials section, and authenticate your Google account to grant n8n access to manage your contacts.

  3. Activate the MCP Server: This n8n workflow uses an MCP trigger. Once configured, you must ensure the workflow is 'Active' in n8n so the trigger is ready to receive calls from your primary AI Agent workflow. This setup provides crucial functionality for integrating advanced n8n templates with AI systems.

Node Details

This n8n workflow leverages the following crucial n8n node types to function as an AI tool server:

Google Contacts Tool MCP Server (n8n trigger):
Function: Acts as the entry point and AI-callable service interface for this n8n workflow.
Key Configuration: Uses the specialized @n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.mcpTrigger which responds only to structured AI calls, defining the capabilities exposed by this n8n template.

Create a contact (Google Contacts Tool n8n node):
Function: Handles requests to add new contacts to the configured Google account.
Key Configuration: Connected via the ai_tool connection to the MCP server.

Delete a contact (Google Contacts Tool n8n node):
Function: Manages the removal of specified contacts based on the AI Agent's instructions.
Key Configuration: Standard Google Contacts operation, exposed as a specific callable function in the n8n workflow.

Get a contact & Get many contacts (Google Contacts Tool n8n nodes):
Function: Used by the AI Agent to retrieve single contacts or lists of contacts, providing data for intelligent decisions or reporting.
Key Configuration: These nodes perform read operations, integral for data retrieval within the overall n8n workflow logic.

Update a contact (Google Contacts Tool n8n node):
Function: Allows the AI Agent to modify existing contact details (e.g., changing a phone number or email address).
* Key Configuration: Completes the CRUD functionality set provided by this n8n template.
