Who is this best for?

  • DevOps Engineers and SRE teams requiring real-time incident response.

  • Development teams using n8n for monitoring and observability.

  • Users looking for robust n8n templates for alerting systems.

  • Anyone needing to automatically manage incoming webhooks from logging/monitoring services using an efficient n8n workflow.

Overview

This comprehensive n8n workflow is designed to provide rapid, automated incident management. In high-stakes production environments, every second counts. This specific n8n workflow ensures that when a critical error occurs (received via a webhook from tools like Sentry, LogRocket, or Datadog), the right teams are notified instantly via Slack, and a structured Jira ticket is automatically created for tracking and remediation. By using the filtering logic within this n8n node setup, non-critical noise is eliminated, allowing teams to focus immediately on true emergencies, making this one of the most valuable n8n templates for technical operations. Implementing this n8n automation significantly streamlines your incident response process.

How it Works

  1. The process initiates with the n8n trigger, a Webhook Trigger node, which listens for incoming POST requests containing error data on the specific path /error-alert.

  2. The flow immediately passes the payload to the Filter Critical Errors n8n node (an If node). This n8n node checks the incoming JSON payload to see if the error level property is strictly equal to 'critical'.

  3. If the condition is TRUE (critical error), the n8n workflow executes two parallel actions:

It uses the Send Slack Alert n8n node to post a highly visible notification to the designated #incidents channel, summarizing the error, environment, and timestamp.
Simultaneously, it uses the Create Jira Bug n8n node to generate a formal bug ticket in the configured project for immediate assignment and tracking.

  1. If the condition is FALSE (non-critical error), the flow proceeds down the alternate branch to the No Action for Non-Critical n8n node, effectively ending the execution path for less urgent notifications, thereby minimizing alert fatigue and ensuring the team focuses on genuine critical incidents captured by this n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' function.

  2. Setup the n8n Trigger: Activate the Webhook Trigger node to generate the unique URL. Configure your error monitoring service (e.g., Sentry, Datadog) to send POST requests to this specific n8n trigger URL.

  3. Configure Credentials:

Slack: Provide valid API credentials for the Send Slack Alert n8n node.
Jira: Provide valid API credentials for the Create Jira Bug n8n node.

  1. Customize Jira Node: Update the Project ID (1234) and Issue Type ID (=7654ew) in the Create Jira Bug n8n node to match your organization's Jira structure.

  2. Activate: Save and activate the n8n workflow to begin real-time incident detection.

Node Details

Webhook Trigger (n8n trigger):
Function: Starts the n8n workflow upon receiving an external POST request from the error monitoring system.
Key Configuration: Uses the designated path /error-alert to listen for incoming data.
Filter Critical Errors (If n8n node):
Function: Acts as the core decision gate. It filters the incoming data, checking the error level.
Key Configuration: Compares {{$node['Webhook Trigger'].json['level']}} to the static string 'critical'.
Send Slack Alert (Slack n8n node):
Function: Notifies the operations team immediately when a critical error is detected, utilizing dynamic data from the preceding n8n nodes.
Key Configuration: Targets the #incidents channel and dynamically embeds the error message, environment, and timestamp.
Create Jira Bug (Jira n8n node):
Function: Automatically logs the incident as a formal, actionable Jira ticket for tracking and assignment.
Key Configuration: Configured to create an Issue Type (=7654ew) within a specific Project ID (1234), using the error message extracted via n8n expressions as the ticket summary.
