Overview

This expert n8n workflow solves the problem of transient clipboard data by providing a permanent, searchable record in Google Sheets. By leveraging a macOS Shortcut to send data to a dedicated n8n webhook, this n8n node setup ensures that every critical copy operation is time-stamped and saved. This specialized n8n template is essential for tracking research excerpts, monitoring code snippets, or managing daily data capture, proving the versatility of the n8n platform in bridging desktop operations with cloud databases. Utilizing n8n simplifies this complex integration.

How it Works

The process begins with the Clipboard Webhook n8n trigger, which is configured to listen for a POST request on the path /copy-paste. This webhook acts as the entry point, receiving the clipboard data sent directly from a user's macOS Shortcut.

Once the webhook successfully captures the content, the flow immediately moves to the Data Formatter n8n node. This essential n8n node processes the incoming raw webhook data. It extracts the clipboard text (stored in $json.body.text) and concurrently generates a formatted timestamp for precise logging.

This structured data is then passed to the Clipboard Logger Sheet n8n node. This final n8n node uses the Google Sheets integration to perform the appendOrUpdate operation. It inserts the Timestamp and Text fields as a new row in the designated Google Sheet spreadsheet, creating a reliable log of all copied content using this efficient n8n workflow. This whole sequence demonstrates the power of n8n templates in automating cross-platform tasks.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON and import it into your self-hosted or cloud n8n instance using the 'New' button.

  2. Set up Credentials: The Clipboard Logger Sheet n8n node requires Google Sheets credentials, specifically a Service Account, to access your sheet. Configure this connection within the node's settings.

  3. Configure Google Sheets Node: Update the document ID and sheet name parameters in the Clipboard Logger Sheet n8n node to point to your specific logging spreadsheet.

  4. Activate the Webhook: After saving the n8n workflow, activate the workflow. The Clipboard Webhook n8n trigger will provide a unique URL. Copy this URL.

  5. Configure macOS Shortcut: Create or modify your macOS Shortcut to perform an 'URL Request' (POST method) to the unique URL provided by the n8n trigger, sending the clipboard content as the body payload.

Node Details

Clipboard Webhook (n8n trigger): This is the starting n8n node. It functions as a listener, waiting for a POST request initiated by the macOS Shortcut. It uses the path /copy-paste to receive the data containing the clipboard text, initiating the entire n8n workflow.
Data Formatter (n8n node - Set): A critical core logic n8n node responsible for data structure. It prepares the raw payload by extracting Text from the webhook body ($json.body.text) and calculates a precise Timestamp using JavaScript's new Date().toLocaleString(). This ensures the data meets the spreadsheet requirements.

  • Clipboard Logger Sheet (n8n node - Google Sheets): This final action n8n node interacts with Google Sheets. It is configured for the appendOrUpdate operation, using the Service Account authentication method. It maps the prepared Timestamp and Text fields generated by the previous n8n node directly to corresponding columns in the spreadsheet, completing the logging process defined in this n8n template.
