Who is this best for?

  • Space enthusiasts, astronomers, or researchers needing real-time, summarized NASA data.

  • Developers looking for advanced examples of the n8n AI Agent architecture leveraging specialized tools.

  • Users wanting to build conversational bots that interface with external APIs.

  • Anyone seeking ready-to-use n8n templates to streamline complex data extraction tasks.

Overview

This advanced n8n workflow provides a solution for conversational data retrieval from multiple specialized APIs, specifically NASA's DONKI (Space Weather) and NEO (Asteroid) databases. Instead of manually checking various endpoints, a user sends a request via Telegram. The core of this automation is the powerful n8n AI Agent node, which intelligently selects the correct NASA n8n node (tool) based on the user's natural language query. It then processes the potentially complex raw data using an OpenAI Large Language Model (LLM) and delivers a concise, human-readable summary back to the user. This specific n8n workflow is highly valuable for demonstrating sophisticated orchestration logic and utilizing specialized n8n node functionality.

How it Works

  1. Trigger Activation: The n8n workflow begins when the Telegram n8n trigger node receives an incoming message from a connected chat.

  2. AI Agent Analysis: The user's query is passed to the AI Agent n8n node. This agent, configured with an OpenAI Chat Model (like GPT-4o-mini), analyzes the incoming natural language request (e.g., "What are the current space weather warnings?").

  3. Tool Selection & Execution: Based on the query analysis, the agent determines which specialized NASA n8n tool is required (e.g., the DONKI Notification n8n node or Asteroid Neo-Browse). It executes the request using that n8n node.

  4. Data Summarization: The raw, often technical JSON data retrieved by the NASA tools is fed back to the OpenAI model within the AI Agent, which generates a clear, summarized response suitable for the end-user.

  5. Completion and Delivery: The final processed text output from the AI Agent is routed to the Telegram n8n node labeled "Finished," which sends the summary back to the original chat user, successfully completing the execution of the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Set up Credentials: You will need to configure three sets of credentials:

a. Telegram: Set up the credentials for the Telegram n8n trigger and action nodes (Bot API key and Chat ID).
b. OpenAI: Configure your OpenAI API key for the 'OpenAI Chat Model' n8n node.
c. NASA: Configure the API key required for the NASA n8n node tools.

  1. Activate the n8n trigger: Ensure the 'Start' Telegram n8n trigger node is correctly linked to a webhook.

  2. Activate the n8n workflow: Save and activate the entire n8n workflow to start monitoring for incoming Telegram messages.

Node Details

Start (Telegram Trigger): This is the essential n8n trigger that initiates the entire automation flow upon receiving a message. It provides the initial user input to the AI Agent.
AI Agent: The central orchestration n8n node, responsible for parsing user intent, deciding which of the available specialized NASA tools to execute, and managing the conversation flow. This is a crucial element of the n8n workflow.
OpenAI Chat Model: Provides the necessary intelligence for the agent. It handles the analysis of user queries and, more importantly, the generation of natural language summaries from the technical data returned by the NASA APIs. This n8n node typically uses a high-performance model like GPT-4o-mini.
NASA Tools (NASA Tool n8n Node): A comprehensive collection of specialized n8n node integrations (e.g., Asteroid Neo-Browse, DONKI Solar Flare, DONKI Interplanetary Shock, etc.). These tools act as callable functions for the AI Agent, allowing it to retrieve specific real-time data from various NASA DONKI and NEO endpoints.

  • Finished (Telegram): The final n8n node used to transmit the summarized AI response back to the user who triggered the n8n workflow, delivering the answer directly to their Telegram chat.
