Overview

Finding new keywords that are starting to gain visibility is crucial for timely SEO optimization. Manually comparing broad date ranges in Google Search Console (GSC) is tedious. This specialized n8n workflow solves this by programmatically querying GSC for search queries and comparing their performance across two distinct periods.

Specifically, this n8n automation identifies any query that had zero impressions in a historical period (Period B) but registered impressions in the most recent period (Period A, typically the last 7 days). Once identified as a new query, the n8n node logic further splits the results into two critical lists: 'Zero Click' opportunities (high priority for optimization) and 'Has Click' drivers (keywords already generating traffic). This reusable n8n workflow significantly accelerates keyword research and prioritization.

How it Works

This n8n workflow starts with a Manual Start n8n trigger, although for production use, it is best paired with a Schedule n8n trigger for weekly runs.

  1. Data Retrieval & Comparison: The n8n workflow uses the Google Search Console n8n node to execute a comparePageInsights operation. It compares the last 7 days (Period A) against a defined historical baseline (Period B), retrieving data grouped by search query.

  2. Filtering for New Queries: The core logic of the n8n workflow is handled by the first Filter n8n node, which keeps only items where the impressions from the historical period (imprb) equal zero. This isolates the new search queries.

  3. Categorizing Zero Click Opportunities: The workflow branches. The 'Zero Click' Filter n8n node checks if the clicks in the current period (clicksa) equal zero. These are highly relevant keywords appearing for the first time but failing to capture user clicks.

  4. Identifying Immediate Drivers: The 'Has Click' Filter n8n node captures the remaining results where current clicks (clicks_a) are greater than zero. These new keywords are already performing well and warrant further optimization efforts.

Installation Guide

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON code and import it directly into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu -> 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Configure Google Search Console Credentials: Locate the 'Compare search analytics' n8n node. You must set up a credential for Google Search Console (via OAuth 2.0) and link it to this n8n node.

  3. Set Site URL: In the same n8n node, replace sc-domain:example.com with your actual verified site URL in GSC.

  4. Adjust Date Ranges (Optional): Review the comparison period settings in the Google Search Console n8n node parameters to ensure they match your desired historical baseline.

  5. Set Up Trigger: Replace the 'Manual Start' n8n trigger with a 'Schedule' n8n trigger (e.g., set to run weekly) to fully automate this analysis.

  6. Add Final Action: Connect the 'Zero Click' and 'Has Click' output nodes to an endpoint like Google Sheets, Slack, or email to receive the structured reports.

Node Details

Manual Start (n8n Trigger): Initiates the execution of the n8n workflow. For automation, swap this n8n trigger with a Schedule node.
Compare search analytics between two date ranges (Google Search Console n8n Node): Fetches search analytics data. Key configuration includes using the comparePageInsights operation, setting the primary date range (A) to 'last7d', and comparing it against a custom historical date range (B). Dimensions are limited to query.
Filter (No Past Impressions) (Filter n8n Node): This critical n8n node identifies new queries by filtering for items where the historical impression count (imprb) equals 0.
Zero Click (Filter n8n Node): Filters the new keywords to find those with current clicks (clicks
a) equal to 0, flagging immediate optimization opportunities.

  • Has Click (Filter n8n Node): Filters the new keywords to find those where current clicks (clicks_a) are greater than 0, indicating already successful new ranking terms.
