Who is this best for?

  • Developers building frontends requiring a fast, serverless authentication backend.

  • Users looking for production-ready n8n templates for API creation.

  • Individuals needing to learn how to integrate cryptographic operations within an n8n workflow.

  • Automation specialists seeking advanced examples of flow control and webhook response management in n8n.

Overview

This sophisticated n8n workflow solves the common challenge of implementing secure user registration and login flows without needing extensive custom backend code. By leveraging Airtable as a persistent data store and utilizing the Crypto n8n node for password hashing, this n8n template provides three distinct API functionality paths (Sign Up, Sign In, Profile Management) via an n8n trigger (Webhook). This architecture ensures that sensitive data (passwords) is never stored in plain text, making the resulting n8n service secure and scalable for prototypes or internal tools. The precise flow control provided by the If n8n node ensures correct validation, error handling, and response structure for a production-ready application.

How it Works

The authentication service is initiated via multiple distinct Webhook n8n trigger points:

  1. Sign Up Flow: The dedicated Sign Up n8n trigger receives user credentials. An Airtable n8n node first checks if the email exists. If the If n8n node determines the email is already in use, an error response is sent. Otherwise, the Crypto n8n node hashes the submitted password. The resulting user record is then securely saved to Airtable using another Airtable n8n node, and a success message is returned.

  1. Sign In Flow: The Sign In n8n trigger activates the verification process. An Airtable n8n node retrieves the stored user data based on the email. The workflow uses an If n8n node to check if the user exists; if not, an error is returned. If the user exists, the submitted password is also hashed via a Crypto n8n node (hash submitted password). A final If n8n node compares the hashed submitted password with the hashed password stored in Airtable. A successful login or a 'wrong password' response is sent back using the Respond to Webhook n8n node accordingly.

  1. Profile Management Flows: Separate n8n triggers handle request to get user details and request to update user details. These paths interact directly with Airtable n8n nodes for reading and writing data, using Set n8n nodes (Specify Current Details, Specify New Details) to structure the data for the API response.

Installation Guide

To deploy this user authentication n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n template: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance using the "New > Import from JSON" option.

  2. Airtable Configuration: The core logic relies heavily on the Airtable n8n node. You must configure your Airtable credentials and ensure you have a database Base and Table ready to store user information (including fields for Email and Hashed Password). Update all eight Airtable n8n nodes with your specific Base ID and Table name.

  3. Credential Setup: Ensure the necessary credentials for Airtable are linked to the respective n8n node instances.

  4. Activate Webhooks: Once activated, n8n will provide unique, publicly accessible URLs for the Sign Up, Sign In, and Profile Management endpoints. Integrate these API URLs into your frontend application to leverage this powerful n8n workflow.

Node Details

Webhook (n8n trigger): Used as the initial n8n trigger for the entire service, defining distinct API endpoints for Sign Up, Sign In, Get Details, and Update Details.
Airtable (n8n node): Serves as the primary database backend. It performs crucial operations like checking user existence, fetching records, inserting new users (add record to database), and updating profile data.
Crypto (n8n node): Essential for security. This n8n node handles the cryptographic hashing of passwords during both registration (hash password) and login verification (hash submitted password).
If (n8n node): Provides critical core logic flow control. These nodes determine whether to proceed with database operations or return an error response, especially for checking email uniqueness and validating matching passwords.
Respond to Webhook (n8n node): Used to send immediate, customized HTTP responses (success messages or various authentication errors) back to the client application interacting with the n8n workflow.
Set (n8n node): Used in the Profile Management paths (Specify Current Details, Specify New Details) to structure and format the data items before returning them in the final API response.
