Overview

Managing complex automations requires reliable error reporting. This specialized n8n workflow template solves the problem of silent failures by providing instant, actionable alerts directly to Telegram. When any of your monitored n8n workflow executions fail, this handler automatically captures critical details—such as the exact error message, the failed n8n node, the workflow name, and the execution URL—and compiles it into a clean, structured Telegram message. This ensures high uptime and rapid response capabilities for all your deployed n8n automations, making this a crucial n8n workflow for production environments.

How it Works

This error handler n8n workflow is designed to execute only when an error occurs in a separate main n8n workflow configured to use it.

  1. Failure Detection: The process begins with the Error Trigger n8n trigger node, which activates upon receiving an execution failure signal from a main n8n workflow.

  2. Configuration Retrieval: The n8n workflow passes the execution context to the Config n8n node (a Set node), which securely holds the necessary telegramChatId required for sending the alert.

  3. Data Extraction and Formatting: The n8n workflow uses advanced expressions to dynamically pull crucial error information (like the name of the last executed n8n node and the precise error message) from the data payload provided by the Error Trigger n8n node.

  4. Real-Time Alert: Finally, the Telegram n8n node uses the extracted error details and the configured chat ID to push a detailed, human-readable notification to the designated Telegram group, providing immediate visibility into the failure. This ensures you know exactly which n8n workflow failed and why, improving your overall n8n monitoring.

Installation Guide

  1. Prerequisites: Ensure you have a Telegram Bot Token and the Chat ID of the group/channel where you want notifications sent. You can use BotFather to create a bot if necessary.

  2. Import: Import this n8n workflow JSON into your n8n instance.

  3. Configure Credentials: Open the Telegram n8n node and create/select credentials for your Telegram Bot Token.

  4. Update Chat ID: Open the Config n8n node (a Set n8n node) and replace the placeholder 123456789 in the telegramChatId assignment with your actual Telegram group or channel ID.

  5. Activate Handler: Ensure this Error Handler n8n workflow is set to Active.

  6. Link to Main Workflow: For any main n8n workflow you want to monitor, go to its Settings -> Error Workflow tab, and select Error Handler send Telegram from the dropdown menu. Save the settings. Any future failure in that main n8n workflow will now automatically activate this error handling n8n workflow template.

Node Details

Error Trigger n8n node:
Function: Acts as the starting n8n trigger for error handling flows. It automatically receives the full execution context (including error data) of the failed parent n8n workflow.
Key Configuration: Standard error trigger setup. It is the crucial entry point for this error handler n8n workflow.
Config (Set n8n node):
Function: Stores external configuration data, specifically the destination telegramChatId, allowing easy global updates to where alerts are sent.
Key Configuration: Defines the variable telegramChatId which needs to be customized by the user.
Telegram n8n node:
Function: Sends the compiled, formatted error message to Telegram using credentials and the Chat ID.
* Key Configuration: The message text uses expressions to pull critical data dynamically from the Error Trigger node, including the Workflow Name, Execution URL, the Last n8n Node Executed, and the detailed Error Detail.
