Overview

This specialized n8n workflow template provides immediate, highly visible feedback on the status of your Git repository. Traditional digital notifications can often be missed, but this n8n automation creates a clear physical alert. The workflow is designed to detect any activity—such as a push, a new pull request, or an issue update—and instantly turn a configured smart light to a specific color, typically red, signaling that attention is required. This integration between the GitHub n8n trigger and Home Assistant is a fantastic example of using n8n for continuous devops_monitoring and ambient intelligence. Deploying this n8n workflow is quick and effective, ensuring critical repository changes are always noticed.

How it Works

This automation sequence starts with a dedicated n8n trigger and completes with an IoT action:

  1. GitHub n8n trigger: The workflow initiates using the On any update in repository n8n node (a GitHub Trigger). This n8n trigger listens for all event types (*) configured for a specified repository (e.g., dummydavid/DemoRepo).

  2. Detection and Execution: As soon as an event occurs (a push, PR merge, issue opened, etc.), the GitHub n8n node captures the payload and forwards the execution.

  3. Home Assistant Action: The subsequent n8n node, named Turn a light red (Home Assistant node), receives the data. It calls the Home Assistant service light.turn_on.

  4. Physical Notification: The n8n workflow instructs Home Assistant to target a specific light entity (defaulting to light.lamp) and sets its color using the RGB value [255, 0, 0], ensuring the light immediately turns red.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON code and import it into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu -> 'Import from JSON'.

  2. GitHub Credentials: Click the On any update in repository n8n node and update the 'GitHubApi' credential with your active GitHub API key and access token.

  3. GitHub Configuration: Configure the Owner and Repository fields to point to the exact repository you wish to monitor.

  4. Webhook Setup: Since this is an n8n trigger, you must save and activate the workflow. n8n will provide a Webhook URL that you must register within your GitHub repository settings (Settings -> Webhooks).

  5. Home Assistant Credentials: Click the Turn a light red n8n node. Add or update the 'Home Assistant API' credential, ensuring it points to your Home Assistant instance and uses a valid long-lived access token.

  6. Light Entity Configuration: Crucially, modify the parameters within the Home Assistant n8n node to replace the default entityid (light.lamp) with the specific entityid of your desired smart light, and optionally adjust the rgb_color array to change the notification color.

Node Details

This simple yet powerful n8n workflow utilizes two main nodes:

GitHub Trigger (On any update in repository)
Function: Acts as the primary n8n trigger, listening for real-time events from a designated GitHub repository.
Key Configuration: Set to listen for Events: (all events) and configured with a specific Owner and Repository name. Requires GitHub API credentials for authentication.

Home Assistant (Turn a light red)
Function: Executes a service call within Home Assistant to manipulate an IoT device based on the n8n trigger.
* Key Configuration: Domain: light, Service: turnon, and uses service attributes to define the physical action. Key parameters include entityid (e.g., light.lamp) and rgb_color (=[[255,0,0]]), which dictates the light that turns on and the color it displays.
