Who is this best for?

  • Businesses needing to quickly digitize expense receipts and invoices.

  • Developers looking for robust n8n templates for OCR integration.

  • Users who need to extract structured data from images (tables).

  • Anyone seeking a no-code solution for OCR tasks using an n8n trigger.

Overview

Manually transcribing receipts or structured data from images is time-consuming and prone to errors. This efficient n8n workflow solves this by providing a simple public form interface. When a user uploads an image, the workflow automatically routes the file to the OCR.space API, leveraging their specialized table recognition feature if requested. This n8n workflow is crucial for automation specialists who need reliable data extraction capabilities directly within their n8n environment. By utilizing a form n8n trigger, this powerful n8n automation makes complex OCR accessible to end-users without technical intervention.

How it Works

This automation begins with a public form, which acts as the primary n8n trigger.

  1. Input Collection: The user uploads the image file (Max 1MB) via the dedicated Trigger • Upload image for OCR form n8n node, and specifies if the image contains a table structure (Yes/No).

  2. Data Preparation: The Prepare • Normalize inputs n8n node standardizes the form inputs, specifically converting the 'Yes/No' radio selection into a usable isTable flag required by the OCR.space API. This standardization step is key for reliable execution of the n8n workflow.

  3. OCR Processing: The OCR.space • Parse image n8n node (an HTTP Request n8n node) sends the prepared file and parameters (including isTable, OCREngine 2, and language set to Polish 'pol') to the OCR.space endpoint. This requires configuring appropriate HTTP Header credentials.

  4. Display Results: Finally, the Display • Show OCR text n8n node renders the extracted text (ParsedResults[0].ParsedText) in a clean, styled web card for easy viewing and copying. This concludes the execution of this specific n8n template.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow and start processing receipts, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance.

  2. Credentials: You must set up credentials for the OCR.space API. This n8n node uses Generic HTTP Header Authentication.

Sign up for an OCR.space API key.
In n8n, go to Credentials and create a new HTTP Header Auth credential.
Set the Header Name to apikey.
Set the Header Value to your specific OCR.space API key.
* Ensure this credential is linked to the OCR.space • Parse image n8n node.

  1. Activate: Enable the n8n workflow. The public URL for the Trigger • Upload image for OCR form will become active, allowing users to upload images and trigger the automation.

Node Details

  • Trigger • Upload image for OCR (Form Trigger n8n trigger):

- Function: Initiates the n8n workflow when an image is uploaded and submitted via the public form.
- Key Configuration: Collects a file input (image) and a radio button input to determine if table recognition is needed.

  • Prepare • Normalize inputs (Set n8n node):

- Function: Transforms the human-readable form input into programmatic values (e.g., converts 'Yes'/'No' selection into a boolean isTable variable).
- Key Configuration: Creates the isTable variable dynamically based on the form output.

  • OCR.space • Parse image (HTTP Request n8n node):

- Function: Sends the uploaded binary file to the OCR.space API for processing.
- Key Configuration: Uses multipart-form-data content type, sets the target language to pol (Polish), uses OCREngine 2, and dynamically includes the isTable parameter from the previous n8n node.

  • Display • Show OCR text (Form Completion n8n node):

- Function: Displays the final extracted text result to the user in the browser after the OCR process completes.
- Key Configuration: Uses a custom message to display the contents of $json.ParsedResults[0].ParsedText, styled using custom CSS for a clean, monospace receipt look.
