Technical Teams requiring structured data extraction from government sources.
Automation Specialists looking for robust n8n templates integrating scraping, custom logic, database storage, and external alerting (SendGrid).
Users aiming to build advanced n8n automation processes involving AI and conditional routing.

Overview

This specialized n8n workflow addresses the critical need for compliance and legal teams to stay immediately updated on new regulatory changes. Manually monitoring dozens of government websites is inefficient and prone to human error. This comprehensive n8n template solves this by scheduling a daily run using a robust n8n trigger. It leverages the ScrapeGraphAI n8n node to intelligently extract structured data from diverse regulatory sources like the SEC, FCA, and Federal Register. A custom JavaScript n8n node then applies proprietary logic to score the severity of the update, often overriding or confirming the AI's initial assessment. If a high-impact alert is detected, the n8n workflow branches to send an immediate notification via SendGrid. Regardless of the urgency, every regulatory record is logged meticulously into a PostgreSQL database. This powerful n8n automation ensures timely compliance, reducing organizational risk and saving valuable team hours.

How it Works

The entire process is managed efficiently within a single n8n workflow:

  1. Daily Activation: The automation starts with the Daily Regulatory Check n8n trigger, set to run every 24 hours.

  2. Source Feeding: A Code n8n node (Define Regulatory Sources) provides a predefined, configurable list of target regulatory URLs (e.g., RSS feeds or general news pages).

  3. Iterative Scraping: The Loop Through Sources n8n node ensures that the subsequent steps process one regulatory source URL at a time using the splitInBatches functionality.

  4. AI Extraction: The Scrape Regulatory Page n8n node (ScrapeGraphAI integration) visits the URL and uses a detailed AI prompt to transform unstructured web content into clean, structured JSON data, including an estimated impactLevel.

  5. Impact Scoring: The Normalize & Score Impact Code n8n node executes crucial custom logic. It scans the summary text for high-impact keywords (like 'penalty', 'urgent', or 'must comply') to accurately set the highImpact boolean flag, enhancing the reliability of the n8n workflow.

  6. Metadata and Checkpoint: The data is normalized, standardized, and timestamped using the Add Timestamp & Metadata n8n node.

  7. Conditional Alerting: The High Impact? n8n node evaluates the highImpact flag. If the value is true, the n8n workflow executes the high-priority alert branch.

  8. Urgent Notification: If triggered, the alert branch prepares email content and sends an urgent notification using the SendGrid Alert n8n node.

  9. Data Persistence: Whether an alert was sent or not, all data streams merge. The Store Regulation Record PostgreSQL n8n node inserts the complete, scored regulatory update into the regulatory_updates table, ensuring a permanent log.

Installation Guide

To deploy this comprehensive n8n workflow, follow these setup steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and import it into your n8n instance as a new workflow.

  2. ScrapeGraphAI Credentials: Add your ScrapeGraphAI credentials to n8n, ensuring the Scrape Regulatory Page n8n node is properly authenticated.

  3. PostgreSQL Setup: Create the regulatoryupdates table in your PostgreSQL database with columns matching the data schema (e.g., title, summary, highimpact, insertedat, sourcelink, impactlevel, effectivedate).

  4. PostgreSQL Credentials: Add your PostgreSQL credentials to the Store Regulation Record n8n node.

  5. SendGrid Setup: Insert your SendGrid API credentials into the SendGrid Alert n8n node and configure the 'To' email address to your compliance team's inbox.

  6. Source Configuration: Review and adjust the list of regulatory URLs within the Define Regulatory Sources Code n8n node.

  7. Activation: Set the n8n workflow to 'Active' to allow the daily schedule n8n trigger to begin execution.

Node Details

Daily Regulatory Check (Schedule Trigger): This is the fundamental n8n trigger, configured to run automatically every 24 hours, initiating the compliance monitoring cycle.
Define Regulatory Sources (Code n8n node): A standard n8n node used to define static data—in this case, an array of regulatory URLs for the workflow to process iteratively.
Scrape Regulatory Page (ScrapeGraphAI n8n node): A specialized AI n8n node that performs intelligent, structured web scraping based on a detailed user prompt, extracting key information like title, summary, and AI-estimated impact level.
Normalize & Score Impact (Code n8n node): A custom JavaScript n8n node that applies business logic, checking the content for urgent keywords (effective immediately, penalty, urgent) to definitively set the high-impact status.
High Impact? (IF n8n node): A core flow control n8n node that creates a decision point in the n8n workflow, routing items flagged as high impact to the SendGrid alerting path.
SendGrid Alert (SendGrid n8n node): Handles the external communication component, sending critical, immediate email notifications based on high-impact regulatory findings.

  • Store Regulation Record (PostgreSQL n8n node): The final persistence layer, configured to insert the full, structured record—including the impact score and metadata—into the regulatory_updates table in PostgreSQL.
