Who is this best for?

SAP Business One Users: Those needing automated access to SAP S/L data.
Integration Developers: Engineers building reliable integrations between SAP and other enterprise systems.

  • n8n Automation Specialists: Users looking for proven n8n templates for handling external API authentication with robust error checking.

Overview

Managing session authentication for enterprise systems like SAP Service Layer requires precise handling of credentials and robust error capture. This specialized n8n workflow serves as an indispensable authentication wrapper. It allows you to define necessary SAP connection parameters (URL, username, password, and database) and execute a POST request to the /Login endpoint.

Unlike simple HTTP requests, this powerful n8n node includes built-in logic to bifurcate the flow, sending successful session responses down one path (extracting the crucial SessionId) and sending failures (due to incorrect credentials or connection issues) down a separate error handling path. By using this n8n template, you ensure that every part of your subsequent integration relies on a valid, authenticated session, minimizing integration friction.

How it Works

This automation is initiated by a manual n8n trigger, making it easy to test and integrate into a larger parent n8n workflow.

  1. Initiation: The 'When clicking ‘Execute workflow’' n8n trigger starts the process.

  2. Data Setup: The 'Set Login Data' n8n node prepares the required variables: sapurl, sapusername, sappassword, and sapcompanydb. These fields must be populated with your specific SAP Service Layer connection details.

  3. Authentication Request: The critical 'SAP Connection' n8n node executes a POST request to the dynamic URL (using the defined sap_url and appending /Login). The request body includes the necessary JSON payload containing the SAP credentials.

  4. Flow Control: The 'SAP Connection' n8n node is configured to continue on error, splitting the flow based on the API response status.

  5. Success Path: If authentication succeeds, the workflow proceeds to the 'Success' n8n node, which reliably extracts the SessionId from the response body for use in future SAP API calls within the larger n8n workflow.

  6. Failure Path: If the API returns an error, the flow redirects to the 'Failed' n8n node, which captures the statusCode and detailed errorMessage, providing valuable debugging information for the user running the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To utilize this authentication n8n template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided n8n workflow JSON and import it directly into your n8n instance using the 'New' -> 'Import from JSON' option.

  2. Configuration: Locate the 'Set Login Data' n8n node.

  3. Credentials: Input your actual SAP Service Layer connection details into the following fields:

sapurl (e.g., https://my-sap-server:50000/b1s/v1/)
sap
username
sappassword
sap
companydb

  1. Testing: Execute the n8n workflow manually. A successful run will output the sessionID in the 'Success' node. A failure will output detailed error messages in the 'Failed' node.

Node Details

When clicking ‘Execute workflow’ (Manual Trigger): The initiating n8n trigger used for development and manual testing.
Set Login Data (Set n8n node): Defines the four critical variables (sapurl, sapusername, sappassword, sapcompanydb) necessary for the SAP Service Layer login request. These inputs are dynamic parameters for the downstream HTTP n8n node.
SAP Connection (HTTP Request n8n node): Performs the actual authentication. It uses a POST method, dynamically constructs the URL, and sends the credentials in a JSON body. The key configuration is onError: continueErrorOutput, which enables the robust success/failure branching logic of this n8n workflow.
Success (Set n8n node): Processes the positive API response, extracting the crucial SessionId using the expression ={{ $json.SessionId }}.

  • Failed (Set n8n node): Processes error responses, extracting the HTTP status code and the detailed error message for easy debugging of the n8n workflow failure.
