Who is this best for?

  • SEO Managers and Specialists who spend excessive time manually compiling monthly reports.

  • Digital Marketing Agencies needing standardized, automated reporting for multiple clients.

  • Data Analysts looking for n8n templates to handle complex API data extraction and custom transformation (like dot/comma conversion).

  • Anyone needing to automate web scraping for internal link audits of published articles.

Overview

This robust n8n workflow provides a comprehensive solution for detailed SEO reporting. Instead of manually copying data from various sources like Google Analytics 4 (GA4) and Google Search Console (GSC), this n8n automation handles complex API calls, metric calculations, and meticulous data formatting. The value of this n8n template lies in its parallelism, allowing it to run multiple heavy data processes (GA4 metrics, GSC keyword queries, and intense article scraping) simultaneously. Furthermore, this n8n workflow features advanced link analysis, allowing users to scrape specific articles for internal and external linking structures—a task usually requiring expensive proprietary tools. By using this powerful n8n node structure, marketers and SEO specialists can save significant time and ensure data accuracy directly within their preferred Google Sheets reporting dashboard.

How it Works

This n8n workflow is initiated by a manual n8n trigger, but is typically set up to run on a schedule (e.g., monthly).

  1. Reporting Setup: The n8n trigger immediately branches into six separate data pipelines running in parallel:

  2. Organic Reach (GA4): The workflow starts by querying the Google Analytics 4 n8n node for high-level organic metrics (Clicks, Impressions, Position) over a defined period. A subsequent Code n8n node calculates daily totals and averages (e.g., average position, average CTR) and formats the numerical data (converting decimal points to commas) before importing the final table into Google Sheets ('Import to Report 1').

  3. Keyword and Page Ranking (GSC via HTTP): Two parallel sub-workflows use the HTTP Request n8n node to interact with the Google Search Console API. They extract either top keywords ('Export Keywords from GSC 2') or top pages ('Export Keywords from GSC 3'). Custom Code n8n nodes then transform the raw JSON response into a flat table structure, adjust numerical formatting, and append the results to 'Report 2' and 'Report 3' sheets.

  4. Manual Data Import: Two simple pipelines export pre-calculated growth data (Largest Position Increases and Decreases) from a 'Data Sheet' (Google Sheets n8n node) and format the data before pasting it into 'Sheet 10' and 'Sheet 11' report sections.

  5. Internal Link Analysis (Scraping): The n8n workflow pulls a list of article URLs from a Data Sheet, uses the HTTP Request n8n node to retrieve the full HTML content of each URL. A sophisticated Code n8n node ('Analyze Links 1' and 'Format Data to Table 1') performs deep HTML parsing to identify all internal links, anchor text, and link attributes, and extracts article metadata (Title, Publication Date) before reporting the detailed, link-by-link breakdown to 'Report 2'.

  6. External Link/Competitor Analysis (Scraping + AI): Similar to the internal link analysis, this section scrapes article HTML. However, it uses an OpenAI n8n node ('Proper Data Formatting') to intelligently format the scraped data (including external links pointing to the main domain) into a standardized CSV structure, which is then parsed and imported into 'Report 3'. This extensive use of the Code n8n node and the n8n automation structure ensures complex data requirements are met efficiently.

Installation Guide

To use this n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON and import it into your n8n instance.

  2. Google Sheets Credentials: Create credentials for the Google Sheets n8n node and update the documentId and sheetName parameters in all Google Sheets nodes (e.g., 'Import to Report 1', 'Export Links from Document 1', etc.) to point to your main SEO Report dashboard and data sheet.

  3. Google Analytics 4 (GA4): Configure the 'Import from Google Analytics 1' n8n node using your GA4 credentials and specify your propertyId. Adjust the start and end dates if necessary.

  4. Google Search Console (GSC): The GSC access uses the HTTP Request n8n node and generic OAuth2 credentials. You must set up a custom OAuth2 application that grants access to the Google Webmasters API (GSC). Reload authorization in nodes 'Export Keywords from GSC 2' and 'Export Keywords from GSC 3'. Update the URL endpoint (e.g., https://www.googleapis.com/webmasters/v3/sites/https%3A%2F%2Fexample.com) to your actual site.

  5. Web Scraping Configuration: In the custom Code n8n node 'Analyze Links 1', update the const domain = "example.com"; variable to your actual website domain. This is crucial for correctly identifying internal links.

  6. OpenAI Integration: Set up the required OpenAI credentials for the '@n8n/n8n-nodes-langchain.openAi' n8n node used in the External Articles Reporting pipeline.

Node Details

Manual Trigger (When clicking 'Test workflow'): The initial n8n trigger point for manual or scheduled execution of the entire n8n workflow.
Google Analytics (Import from Google Analytics 1): Fetches daily organic metrics (Clicks, Impressions, Position, CTR) from a specified GA4 property ID. Key Configuration: Uses custom date range and specific GA4 metrics.
HTTP Request (Export Keywords from GSC 2/3): Simulates Google Search Console API calls to retrieve search analytics data (keywords or pages). Key Configuration: Uses OAuth2 for authentication and requires updating the target site URL and date ranges.
Code Node (Format Data 7): This complex n8n node transforms the GA4 daily data, calculates total clicks/impressions and average CTR/position, and converts decimal points to commas for reporting.
Code Node (Analyze Links 1): The core web scraping n8n node for internal link analysis. It intelligently parses HTML to find the main content block (entry-content), extracts all internal links, anchor text, rel attributes, title, and publication date.
Code Node (Format Data for Table Paste 1): Restructures the scraped link data so that each internal link found results in a new row in the Google Sheets report, while preserving the parent article metadata.
Code Node (Format Data 12/13): Utility n8n nodes used to read existing SEO ranking data from a spreadsheet and format numerical fields (e.g., Estimated Traffic) by converting dots to commas.
OpenAI (Proper Data Formatting): Leverages an AI model (GPT-4o) to structure complex scraped data (like titles, links, descriptions, and attributes) into a standardized CSV table format, simplifying subsequent import using another n8n node.

  • Google Sheets (Multiple nodes): Used extensively for both extracting input data (from the 'Data Sheet') and appending the final, transformed data into various sections of the comprehensive SEO report document. This is the primary destination n8n node for all data.
