Automation specialists looking for robust n8n templates for CRM synchronization and data consistency.
Users seeking a practical n8n workflow implementation example for complex conditional logic.

Overview

This robust n8n workflow addresses the crucial challenge of maintaining data consistency between your e-commerce platform (Shopify) and your customer support system (Zendesk). By deploying this specific n8n automation, every time a customer profile is updated in Shopify, the system instantly searches Zendesk. If the customer exists, relevant fields (like phone number) are updated using an existing n8n node connection. If they are new, a contact is automatically created. This n8n workflow template minimizes data latency and ensures support agents always have the most accurate contact information, improving customer service efficiency and response times. It demonstrates effective use of conditional n8n nodes for precise flow control.

How it Works

This efficient n8n workflow operates entirely on events, ensuring data is processed in near real-time:

  1. The process begins with the On customer updated n8n trigger (a Shopify n8n node), which initiates the execution whenever a customer profile modification occurs in Shopify (specifically targeting the customers/update topic).

  2. The workflow immediately executes a search operation using the Zendesk n8n node (Search contact by email adress), attempting to locate a matching user based on the incoming customer's email.

  3. The results from Zendesk are processed by the Keep only UserId and email n8n node, which cleans and isolates essential Zendesk data points (ID and phone number) using a Set n8n node.

  4. The original Shopify data and the processed Zendesk lookup data are combined using the Add Zendesk contact Id to Shopify data Merge n8n node, pairing records based on the email address.

  5. The first conditional n8n node (User exists in Zendesk) checks if a Zendesk ID was returned, determining the path forward.

  6. Path A (User Exists): If the user exists, the automation proceeds to a second conditional n8n node (Contact data is modified) which checks if the phone number in Shopify differs from the existing phone number in Zendesk. If an update is necessary, the Update contact in Zendesk n8n node executes the data synchronization. If not, the flow ends gracefully.

  7. Path B (User Does Not Exist): If the user is new to Zendesk, the Create contact in Zendesk n8n node automatically provisions a new user record using the comprehensive contact details provided by the initial Shopify n8n trigger.

Installation Guide

To install and utilize this powerful n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import the n8n Workflow: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu -> 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Configure Shopify Credentials: Click the On customer updated n8n trigger node. You will need to set up a new credential for Shopify, providing your Store URL and API credentials. This will automatically set up the required webhook.

  3. Configure Zendesk Credentials: Click on any Zendesk n8n node (Search contact..., Create contact..., etc.). Set up a new Zendesk API credential, usually requiring your domain, email, and API token.

  4. Activate: Once credentials are set for all relevant n8n nodes, save the n8n workflow and toggle the status to 'Active'. The n8n trigger will now be listening for updates from Shopify.

Node Details

On customer updated (Shopify Trigger n8n node): The starting n8n trigger. It listens for the customers/update event, initiating the entire n8n workflow.
Search contact by email adress (Zendesk n8n node): Performs a Search operation for the User resource in Zendesk, using the customer's email address as the query filter. It is configured to always output data to ensure the Merge n8n node receives input even on a missed search.
Keep only UserId and email (Set n8n node): This essential n8n node transforms the Zendesk output, extracting the id, email, and phone fields and renaming them for clarity (ZendeskUserId, ZendeskEmail, etc.).
Add Zendesk contact Id to Shopify data (Merge n8n node): Merges the initial Shopify data stream with the Zendesk lookup results, keyed by the email address. This allows subsequent n8n nodes to access both sets of data.
User exists in Zendesk (If n8n node): Checks if the ZendeskUserId is present (isNotEmpty), directing the n8n workflow to either update (True) or create (False) the contact.
Contact data is modified (If n8n node): Compares the incoming Shopify phone field against the existing ZendeskPhone field. Only proceeds to update if the values are not equal.
Create contact in Zendesk (Zendesk n8n node): Executes the Create operation for the User resource, pulling contact details from the original Shopify n8n trigger data.
Update contact in Zendesk (Zendesk n8n node): Executes the Update operation for the existing Zendesk User, specifically setting the new phone number using the extracted ZendeskUserId ID.
