Overview

This automation provides a robust solution for capturing website screenshots reliably, even for complex or JavaScript-heavy pages. Leveraging the Bright Data Web Unlocker, this n8n workflow ensures the site is rendered correctly before capturing the image. This is crucial for monitoring competitor pages, auditing website changes, or ensuring legal compliance regarding publicly displayed information. This specific n8n workflow demonstrates how to handle binary file responses from an API and subsequently save them directly to a local file system, providing a complete, self-contained automation package. It's a fantastic example of a functional n8n template for technical integration.

How it Works

The entire process is initiated by a Manual n8n trigger, making it easy to test or integrate into a larger scheduled automation.

  1. Initialization: The n8n trigger fires, passing control to the first functional n8n node.

  2. Variable Setting: The 'Set URL, Filename and Bright Data Zone' n8n node defines the target URL (https://dev.to/), the desired output filename (e.g., devto.png), and the specific Bright Data Zone identifier (e.g., web_unlocker1).

  3. Screenshot Capture (API Call): The 'Capture a screenshot' n8n node, an HTTP Request node, sends a POST request to the Bright Data API. It configures the request to capture a screenshot in raw format for the defined URL and utilizes the necessary HTTP Header Authentication. Critically, this n8n node is configured to receive the response as a file, storing the binary image data under the specified dynamic filename property.

  4. Local Storage: Finally, the 'Write a file to disk' n8n node takes the binary file data generated in the previous step and writes it to the local disk location defined in its file path configuration (e.g., c:\devto.png). This completes the n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and paste it directly into your n8n instance via the 'New' menu > 'Import from JSON'.

  2. Credentials: You must set up HTTP Header Authentication credentials for the 'Capture a screenshot' n8n node, providing your required Bright Data API key or username/password token.

  3. Configuration (Set Node): Update the 'Set URL, Filename and Bright Data Zone' n8n node with your specific target URL, preferred output filename, and your active Bright Data proxy zone name.

  4. Configuration (Write File Node): Adjust the 'Write a file to disk' n8n node. The current file path is set to a Windows example (c:\). Update this path to a directory accessible by your n8n host system (e.g., a local disk path or mounted network volume).

  5. Execution: Run the n8n workflow by clicking the 'Test workflow' n8n trigger.

Node Details

When clicking ‘Test workflow’ (Manual Trigger): The starting n8n trigger for immediate execution or testing purposes.
Set URL, Filename and Bright Data Zone (Set n8n node): Essential for defining workflow parameters dynamically. It sets three string variables: url, filename, and the Bright Data zone (webunlocker1).
Capture a screenshot (HTTP Request n8n node): Handles the external communication. It uses a POST request, generic HTTP Header authentication, and sends parameters like url, zone, and dataformat: screenshot. Key configuration includes setting the response format to file and storing the output under the dynamic filename property defined in the previous n8n node.
Write a file to disk (Write File n8n node): Responsible for saving the binary data. It uses the write operation, specifying the output filename path using an expression: ={{ "c:\\"+ $json.filename }}. The binary data to be written is retrieved from the input data property name, matching the dynamically set filename.
