Overview

Manual keyword research is time-consuming and often lags behind trending topics. This sophisticated n8n workflow solves this by running a fully automated, scheduled research process.

By leveraging the advanced capabilities of an n8n AI Agent connected to large language models (like GPT-4o-mini) and a dedicated search tool (MCP Keyword Search), this system proactively identifies trending keywords related to a defined topic every week. The crucial benefit of this specific n8n workflow is its use of structured output parsers, guaranteeing that the AI's findings are always outputted as clean, reliable JSON data. This data is then instantly saved to Google Sheets, creating a perpetually updated database of competitive keywords, ensuring your content strategy is always current. This powerful n8n solution eliminates manual copy-pasting and transforms your research process.

How it Works

This n8n workflow operates on a three-stage process, starting with a time-based trigger and concluding with structured data storage.

  1. Trigger and Setup: The process begins with the ๐Ÿ•’ Run Weekly n8n trigger node, set to execute every Monday at 9 AM. The workflow then flows into the โœ๏ธ Define Topic or competitor n8n node, where the user sets the input topic (e.g., 'AI blogging') that guides the research.

  2. AI Research and Tool Use: The input topic is passed to the ๐Ÿค– AI Agent (Keyword Finder) n8n node. This agent orchestrates the research:

It uses the ๐Ÿ’ฌ GPT Brain (OpenAI Chat Model) for interpreting the task and generating queries.
It utilizes the ๐Ÿ” MCP Keyword Search n8n tool to perform real-time searches for trending data related to the topic.
* The agent output is routed through the Auto-fixing Output Parser and Structured Output Parser n8n nodes to ensure the resulting data is clean and adheres strictly to a predefined JSON schema (keyword, description).

  1. Data Storage: Finally, the clean, structured data set containing the trending keywords is sent to the ๐Ÿ“„ Save to Google Sheets n8n node. This node automatically appends the new research findings as fresh rows in the specified Google Sheet, providing a historical log of weekly keyword trends. This entire process is defined within this single, efficient n8n workflow.

Installation Guide

To deploy this n8n workflow template, follow these steps:

  1. Import: Copy the provided JSON data and navigate to your n8n instance. Click '+ New' and then 'Import from JSON' to load the n8n workflow.

  2. OpenAI Credentials: Locate the ๐Ÿ’ฌ GPT Brain node (and related AI Agent nodes). Connect your OpenAI API key credentials.

  3. MCP Client Credentials: Set up credentials for the ๐Ÿ” MCP Keyword Search n8n node, which facilitates the live search functionality. This typically requires Bright Data or a similar search API key.

  4. Google Sheets Setup: Click the ๐Ÿ“„ Save to Google Sheets n8n node. Establish your Google Sheets OAuth2 API connection and select the target spreadsheet and specific sheet where the keyword data will be logged.

  5. Configure Input: In the โœ๏ธ Define Topic or competitor n8n node, customize the 'Topic' variable to match your specific industry or competitor for research.

  6. Activate: Save the n8n workflow and set the active toggle to 'On'. The n8n trigger will now execute the research automatically on the defined schedule.

Node Details

This n8n template relies on several key nodes for its functionality:

๐Ÿ•’ Run Weekly (Schedule Trigger)
Function: The primary n8n trigger that initiates the entire automation.
Key Configuration: Set to run Every week on Monday at 9:
00.

โœ๏ธ Define Topic or competitor (Set)
Function: Defines the seed topic ('AI blogging') that the AI agent will use for its research query.
Key Configuration: Creates a field named Topic with the target string value.

๐Ÿค– AI Agent (Keyword Finder) (Agent)
Function: The core intelligence of this n8n workflow. It uses the input topic, queries the LLM (๐Ÿ’ฌ GPT Brain), and utilizes the search tool to find trending keywords.
Key Configuration: Uses a custom prompt structure to request trending keywords based on the input topic.

๐Ÿ” MCP Keyword Search (MCP Client Tool)
Function: Provides the AI Agent with access to real-time search engine data, enabling the discovery of current trends rather than relying solely on the LLM's training cutoff.
Key Configuration: Configured as the search_engine tool within the AI Agent framework.

Structured Output Parser (Output Parser)
Function: Ensures the AI's complex response is converted into a reliable, structured JSON format for downstream nodes.
Key Configuration: Requires a JSON schema example to guide the parsing process, guaranteeing clean data for the Google Sheets n8n node.

๐Ÿ“„ Save to Google Sheets (Google Sheets)
Function: The final action n8n node that logs the successful keyword findings.
Key Configuration: Uses the append operation and maps the structured JSON fields (topic, trending keyword) to the correct columns in the spreadsheet.
