What is Memory Boost?

Memory Boost is a specialized utility designed to solve the problem of context loss and silent failures in long-running AI agent sessions. By integrating this into your Openclaw Skills library, you provide agents with a standardized way to record their progress, decisions, and next steps in a durable local file system. This ensures that even if a session restarts or a process stalls, the agent can resume work with full situational awareness.

The skill operates on two levels: Task Memory and the Keep-Alive Loop. Task Memory automatically creates a structured environment for every assignment, while the Keep-Alive Loop provides active monitoring through watchdog and replayer jobs. This creates a robust framework where Openclaw Skills can operate autonomously over extended periods without losing track of complex goals.

Memory Boost Use Cases

  • Managing long-running multi-step coding or research tasks that span multiple sessions.
  • Preventing agent stalls during complex workflows by using automated watchdog monitoring.
  • Creating a standardized audit trail of AI decisions and progress through persistent markdown notes.
  • Resuming interrupted tasks seamlessly with pre-defined restart notes and heartbeats.

How Memory Boost Works

  1. The agent initializes a task-specific folder within the local memory directory containing essential documentation templates.
  2. Throughout the lifecycle, the agent updates a heartbeat in RESUME.md and tracks progress via CHECKLIST.md.
  3. For high-stakes or lengthy tasks, the user arms the keep-alive loop to enable active background monitoring.
  4. Scheduled watchdog jobs scan for stalls or missing context, generating alerts if the agent stops making progress.
  5. Replayer and Escalator jobs attempt mechanical fixes or force session handoffs to resolve persistent blockers.
  6. Integrity validators continuously ensure all task folders adhere to the canonical documentation schema.

Memory Boost Setup

Memory Boost is designed to work out of the box with no external dependencies. Ensure you are running on macOS or Linux.

# The skill manages storage automatically in your home directory
mkdir -p ~/.openclaw/memory/tasks

# To start monitoring for a long task
/loop-start

# To disable monitoring once a task is completed
/loop-stop

Memory Boost Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data within ~/.openclaw/memory/ using a strict hierarchy for high reliability:

File/Folder Purpose
tasks/<task-name>/ Contains RESUME.md (status), CHECKLIST.md (steps), and DOCS.md (context).
TEMPLATE.md The canonical blueprint used to backfill missing task notes.
TASK-INDEX.md A high-level registry of all managed tasks and their current health.
LOOP-STATE.md A toggle file tracking whether active monitoring is armed or disarmed.
WATCHDOG.md Created dynamically within a task folder only when a stall is detected.

Memory Boost Advanced Features

  • Multi-layer monitoring: Includes a watchdog for detection, a replayer for recovery, and an escalator for critical failures.
  • Automated Self-Healing: The Validator job automatically repairs broken note structures and refreshes the task index.
  • Heartbeat Tracking: Uses time-based staleness detection (24h threshold) to identify abandoned tasks.
  • No-Op Efficiency: The loop system is designed to consume zero tokens when disarmed, saving costs on shorter Openclaw Skills operations.
