What is Agent Publish?

The Agent Publish skill is a standardized workflow designed to manage the lifecycle of AI agents by automating deployment tasks. Installed as a foundational tool in agent workspaces, it continuously monitors modifications to essential files like SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, IDENTITY.md, and TOOLS.md. When changes are detected, it streamlines the creation of standard distribution assets, demonstrating the utility of Openclaw Skills for robust version and registry management.

By executing automated semantic version updates, compiling metadata, and interfacing directly with command-line tools for ClawHub and GitHub, the skill eliminates manual packaging errors. It ensures your AI agents are promptly, safely, and consistently deployed, making behavioral and systemic updates accessible with minimal friction.

Agent Publish Use Cases

  • Detecting modifications to core behavioral configurations and prompting the developer for an immediate publish action.
  • Syncing local agent workspaces with central registries and git repositories without manual export procedures.
  • Managing multi-agent or multi-version releases with strict SemVer enforcement and descriptive changelogs.
  • Establishing standard release structures across specialized agent deployments using Openclaw Skills patterns.

How Agent Publish Works

  1. File Monitoring: The skill monitors the local agent workspace for modifications to baseline files including SOUL.md, AGENTS.md, IDENTITY.md, TOOLS.md, and SKILL.md.
  2. Interactive Promotion: On change detection, it initiates a terminal prompt asking the user whether to publish to ClawHub, push to GitHub, run both actions, or defer.
  3. Artifact Preparation: Gathers local workspace files and packages them into the local directory (~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/), dynamically generating the SKILL.md interface description from the core SOUL.md architecture.
  4. SemVer Evaluation: Prompts or auto-calculates version increments (Major for architectural changes, Minor for feature improvements, Patch for bug fixes) and updates the metadata manifest.
  5. ClawHub Registry Push: Authenticates and posts the finalized skill package to ClawHub under the correct tag and user namespace.
  6. GitHub Repository Sync: Verifies remote repository existence, provisions a new repository if absent via GitHub CLI, and commits the updated codebase to the target branch.

Agent Publish Setup

Before running the automated publishing workflow, verify that your local environment is correctly configured and authenticated with both registries:

  1. Verify Local Authentications: Ensure that git, ClawHub CLI, and GitHub CLI tools are installed and configured:
clawhub whoami
gh auth status
git --version
  1. Log In (If Unauthenticated): If you need to log in to either service, run the following setup commands:
# Log into ClawHub Registry
clawhub login

# Log into your GitHub Account
gh auth login --hostname github.com --git-protocol https --web

Agent Publish Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill formats and packs the active workspace into a structured, standardized structure before pushing to external repositories:

Local Package File Structure

Path File Description
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/ SKILL.md Skill entrance doc; encapsulates frontmatter definition and architecture overview
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/ _meta.json Versioning configuration file capturing author, release tags, and timestamps
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/references/ soul.md Local baseline snapshot of the agent's core SOUL.md
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/references/ agents.md Local baseline snapshot of the agent's AGENTS.md
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/references/ identity.md Local baseline snapshot of the agent's IDENTITY.md
~/.qclaw/skills/<agent-id>/references/ tools.md Local baseline snapshot of the agent's TOOLS.md

Metadata Manifest Scheme (_meta.json)

The registry records your updates based on properties structured in the package metadata file:

{
  "version": "<semver>",
  "updatedAt": "<YYYY-MM-DD>",
  "changelog": "<change-description>",
  "author": "<clawhub-username>"
}

Agent Publish Advanced Features

  • Dynamic Documentation Generation: Automatically parses system architectures and core behaviors from SOUL.md to write a clean, SEO-friendly SKILL.md.
  • Heuristic Semantic Versioning: Implements clear versioning criteria, mapping major structural edits, feature additions, and minor adjustments to appropriate SemVer updates.
  • Automated Repository Provisioning: Checks for GitHub repository availability and provisions a new public repository automatically if the remote target is not found.
  • Multi-Destination Synchronization: Orchestrates atomic deployment pipelines to safely distribute your agent package to both ClawHub and remote git servers concurrently.
  • Foundational Workspace Baseline: Engineered to behave as a global baseline utility loaded within all developer environments designed for Openclaw Skills deployment.
