What is APIMon?

APIMon is a developer-centric command-line utility designed to streamline the management of API ecosystems. As part of the Openclaw Skills library, it provides a centralized system for logging, tracking, and analyzing every aspect of your API interactions—from health checks and schema validations to linting and performance reporting. By utilizing a timestamped logging architecture, it ensures that every operation is auditable and searchable, making it an essential tool for developers who need to maintain high reliability and observability for their services.

This skill eliminates the need for complex external monitoring services for many internal tasks, offering a lightweight, Bash-based solution that requires no external dependencies or API keys. Whether you are debugging a flaky endpoint or generating weekly uptime reports, APIMon provides a structured, local-first environment to manage your API-related metadata efficiently.

APIMon Use Cases

  • Tracking API health and response latency during development and production.
  • Maintaining a historical log of OpenAPI spec validations and linting results.
  • Recording and auditing mock data generation and schema conversion tasks.
  • Generating data-driven uptime and status reports for stakeholders.
  • Diffing changes between API versions to identify breaking changes quickly.

How APIMon Works

  1. The user executes a command (e.g., check, validate, or report) followed by an input string containing the relevant API data.
  2. The skill automatically appends a precise timestamp to the entry and persists it in a command-specific log file within the local share directory.
  3. Every action is simultaneously recorded in a central history.log for unified traceability across different API tasks.
  4. Users can retrieve data by running the command without arguments to see recent entries or by using search and stats commands.
  5. Collected data can be exported into JSON, CSV, or TXT formats for integration with external dashboards or documentation tools.

APIMon Setup

To integrate these Openclaw Skills into your workflow, ensure you have Bash 4.0+ installed. Follow these steps:

# Ensure the script is executable
chmod +x apimon

# Check the current status and verify data directory creation
apimon status

# Run a test check to initialize your first log entry
apimon check "Initial system health check - 200 OK"

APIMon Data Schema & Taxonomy

APIMon organizes data locally using a flat-file structure to ensure maximum speed and portability. The taxonomy is defined as follows:

Component Path Description
Data Directory ~/.local/share/apimon/ Root storage for all skill-related logs.
Command Logs [command].log Individual files for tasks like check.log, lint.log, etc.
Master History history.log A chronological aggregate of every action taken across the skill.
Export Files export.[fmt] On-demand generated files in JSON, CSV, or TXT formats.

Each log entry follows the strict format: YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM|[input_string].

APIMon Advanced Features

  • Multi-format data portability allowing seamless export to JSON, CSV, or TXT.
  • Centralized statistics engine providing entry counts and disk usage metrics via apimon stats.
  • Full-text search capability across all command logs to find specific errors or historical events.
  • Zero-dependency architecture utilizing standard Unix utilities for high performance and compatibility.
  • Built-in health check system to monitor the integrity of the data directory and versioning.
