What is calctl?

calctl is a high-performance, native macOS utility designed to provide direct terminal access to the Apple Calendar database. Built using the EventKit framework, it bypasses the limitations of AppleScript to offer a faster and more reliable experience for power users. As part of the Openclaw Skills directory, it enables developers to integrate calendar workflows into their local automation scripts or AI-driven tasks seamlessly.

The tool allows for comprehensive event management, including creating, editing, and deleting events across different local and synced accounts. By leveraging native Swift implementation, it ensures that your calendar data remains synchronized with the system-wide EventKit store while providing a developer-friendly interface.

calctl Use Cases

  • Listing all scheduled events for the current day or week directly in the terminal.
  • Creating recurring meetings using standard iCalendar RRULE syntax for complex schedules.
  • Verifying attendee participation status and emails for upcoming calendar invites.
  • Automating event creation through shell scripts or CI/CD pipelines.
  • Querying specific calendars by name to isolate work or personal schedules.

How calctl Works

  1. The user invokes a command through the calctl CLI or an AI agent utilizing Openclaw Skills.
  2. The application requests native permission to access macOS Calendars via the Privacy & Security settings.
  3. calctl interacts directly with the EventKit framework to fetch or modify event data.
  4. For write operations, the tool parses input flags for titles, dates, and recurrence rules (RRULE).
  5. The tool processes the request and returns formatted text or structured data output to the terminal.

calctl Setup

Install calctl using Homebrew (recommended):

brew install christianteohx/tap/calctl

Alternatively, download the binary directly:

curl -fsSL https://github.com/christianteohx/calctl/releases/latest/download/calctl -o ~/bin/calctl
chmod +x ~/bin/calctl

After installation, run calctl authorize and grant permission in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Calendars for your terminal emulator.

calctl Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill interacts with the macOS EventKit store using the following data structure:

Attribute Description
ID Unique identifier for the event entity
Title Text string for the event subject
Start/End Date and time strings (YYYY-MM-DD HH:MM)
Recurrence iCalendar RRULE string (FREQ, INTERVAL, BYDAY, etc.)
Attendees Array of objects containing Name, Email, and Status
Calendar The source calendar name or account identifier

calctl Advanced Features

  • Support for complex iCalendar RRULE patterns including DAILY, WEEKLY, MONTHLY, and YEARLY frequencies.
  • Detailed attendee metadata tracking showing participation status such as accepted, pending, or declined.
  • Filterable queries to target specific calendars or date ranges.
  • Native Swift 6.0 implementation for macOS 13+ ensuring minimal latency and high reliability.
  • Integration ready for Openclaw Skills powered workflows and automated scheduling agents.
