What is ask-ai?

The ask-ai skill is designed to enhance the problem-solving capabilities of your AI agent by providing a structured way to access external intelligence. When an agent encounters a problem beyond its immediate scope or local knowledge, this skill allows it to leverage the specialized reasoning of platforms like ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and DeepSeek. By integrating these Openclaw Skills, developers can ensure their agents never get stuck on complex edge cases or deep technical explanations.

This skill operates in two distinct modes to balance autonomy and user control. Whether you need a second opinion on a difficult code bug or a deep dive into a new technology, ask-ai provides the necessary connectivity to external LLMs to get the job done efficiently.

ask-ai Use Cases

  • Resolving knowledge gaps during complex coding sessions.
  • Handling explicit user requests to consult external models like ChatGPT or Claude.
  • Performing multi-round reasoning tasks that require high-level cognitive processing.
  • Explaining complex architectural concepts where a broader context is needed.

How ask-ai Works

  1. The agent identifies a trigger, such as a knowledge gap, a complex problem, or a direct user command.
  2. The system checks the current operational mode: Ask Mode or Trust Mode.
  3. In Ask Mode, the agent requests user permission before opening an external assistant interface.
  4. In Trust Mode, the agent automatically initiates a session with the selected external AI.
  5. The agent retrieves the answer from the external source and summarizes the findings for the user.
  6. The solution is applied or reported back to the main workflow within the Openclaw Skills environment.

ask-ai Setup

To configure the ask-ai skill, you can toggle the interaction behavior directly through natural language commands within your agent interface. No complex installation is required if the Openclaw Skills framework is active.

To switch to automatic consultation:

# Tell the agent:
"Trust Mode"

To switch back to manual permission:

# Tell the agent:
"Ask Mode"

ask-ai Data Schema & Taxonomy

The ask-ai skill manages state and communication between the agent and external services using the following structure:

Attribute Type Description
mode string Current operating mode: 'Ask' or 'Trust'.
target_ai string The URL or identifier for the assistant being used (e.g., ChatGPT, Claude).
trigger_context string The specific problem or query that necessitated external help.
response_summary string The distilled result provided by the external AI.

ask-ai Advanced Features

  • Support for multiple top-tier AI providers including DeepSeek and Gemini.
  • Dynamic mode switching to accommodate different levels of agent autonomy.
  • Integration with Openclaw Skills for standardized communication protocols.
  • Automated reporting that provides concise summaries with the option for deep-dive details.
