What is Backup?

The Backup skill is a critical utility for users of Openclaw Skills who need to ensure the longevity and security of their AI agent's data. It provides a streamlined, automated approach to creating encrypted snapshots of the entire agent environment, including its unique memory, custom skills, and sensitive credentials. By leveraging industry-standard tools like GPG for AES-256 symmetric encryption, it guarantees that even if your backups are stored in the cloud, your data remains private and inaccessible to unauthorized parties.

This skill is built to handle both full system recovery and portable workspace migrations. It allows developers to treat their agent's 'brain' as a modular asset that can be moved between different hosting environments without losing context. As a core part of your Openclaw Skills library, the Backup skill transforms a volatile local installation into a resilient, production-ready AI workstation.

Backup Use Cases

  • Performing disaster recovery after a hardware failure or operating system corruption.
  • Migrating an agent's learned memory and skills to a new machine or server.
  • Creating scheduled, encrypted snapshots of sensitive configurations and credentials.
  • Offloading agent data to cloud storage providers like AWS S3 or Google Drive for long-term retention.

How Backup Works

  1. The user initiates a backup through a script that can optionally stop the gateway to ensure data consistency.
  2. The skill generates two distinct archives: a full system backup (for complete recovery) and a workspace-only backup (for brain portability).
  3. Every archive is encrypted using AES-256 symmetric encryption via GPG using a pre-configured passphrase.
  4. Local backups are stored in a designated directory and automatically pruned based on the defined retention policy.
  5. If cloud destinations are configured, the upload script pushes the encrypted files to services like S3, R2, or B2.
  6. During restoration, the skill identifies the backup type and safely extracts files, maintaining a safety copy of the existing state.

Backup Setup

To deploy this skill within your Openclaw Skills environment, ensure gpg and tar are installed on your system.

# 1. Create the credentials directory
mkdir -p ~/.openclaw/credentials/backup/

# 2. Set your encryption passphrase
echo "your-secure-passphrase" > ~/.openclaw/credentials/backup/backup-passphrase
chmod 600 ~/.openclaw/credentials/backup/backup-passphrase

# 3. Run a manual backup to verify
~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/backup/scripts/backup.sh

# 4. (Optional) Run the test script to verify cloud connectivity
~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/backup/scripts/test-backup.sh

Backup Data Schema & Taxonomy

Component Format Storage Location
Full Backup tar.gz.gpg ~/backups/openclaw/
Workspace Backup tar.gz.gpg ~/backups/openclaw/
Passphrase Plaintext (600 permissions) ~/.openclaw/credentials/backup/backup-passphrase
Cloud Config JSON ~/.openclaw/workspace/skills/backup/config.json
Cloud Credentials Various (AWS, GCS, Rclone) ~/.openclaw/credentials/backup/

Backup Advanced Features

  • Support for multiple cloud backends including AWS S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, and Google Cloud Storage.
  • Granular restore logic that allows extracting only the workspace 'brain' from a full system backup.
  • Automatic local retention management to prevent disk exhaustion by pruning old archives.
  • Integration with rclone, enabling backups to consumer platforms like Google Drive.
  • Pre-flight check scripts that validate encryption and upload paths before production use.
