What is Basecamp CLI?

The Basecamp CLI is a robust command-line tool designed for developers who need to interact with the 37signals ecosystem without leaving their terminal. Built with TypeScript, it provides a direct interface to the Basecamp 3 (bc3) API, enabling users to list, create, and update projects and tasks programmatically. This tool is a valuable component for those utilizing Openclaw Skills to bridge the gap between their development environment and project management suite.

By leveraging the 37signals Launchpad for authentication, this CLI ensures secure access to your workspace. It is specifically designed to work within automated environments, making it a perfect fit for users who want to incorporate Basecamp actions into their existing Clawdbot workflows. As part of the wider range of Openclaw Skills, this CLI focuses on efficiency and security, ensuring that sensitive credentials like client secrets are never stored on disk.

Basecamp CLI Use Cases

  • Rapidly creating and organizing to-do lists during development sprints.
  • Automating project status updates through Clawdbot integration.
  • Managing campfire messages and project threads directly from a terminal or script.
  • Integrating Basecamp project management into CI/CD pipelines using Openclaw Skills.
  • Querying project metadata for custom developer dashboards and reports.

How Basecamp CLI Works

  1. The user installs the CLI globally using npm to enable the basecamp command across the system.
  2. An OAuth application is created in the 37signals Launchpad to provide the necessary API credentials.
  3. The user configures the CLI with their Client ID and sets the Client Secret as an environment variable for enhanced security.
  4. Upon running the login command, the CLI authenticates the user and establishes a session with the Basecamp API.
  5. The tool executes commands by sending requests to the bc3 API, allowing for seamless management of resources via Openclaw Skills.

Basecamp CLI Setup

First, install the package via npm:

npm i -g @emredoganer/basecamp-cli

Create an integration at 37signals Launchpad. Then, configure your environment and log in:

basecamp auth configure --client-id <id> --redirect-uri http://localhost:9292/callback
export BASECAMP_CLIENT_SECRET="<secret>"
basecamp auth login

Basecamp CLI Data Schema & Taxonomy

The CLI interacts with the following data structures from the Basecamp 3 API:

Object Description
Projects Contains names, descriptions, and unique identifiers for Basecamp containers.
To-dos Individual task items and their associated list metadata.
Messages Threaded communications and campfire chat entries.
Auth Store Local storage for Client ID and Redirect URI (excludes Client Secret).

This structure ensures that Openclaw Skills can easily parse and manipulate project data for automation.

Basecamp CLI Advanced Features

  • Direct integration with Clawdbot workflows for autonomous project updates.
  • Support for the full range of bc3 API endpoints including messages and campfires.
  • Security-first architecture that prevents sensitive secrets from being persisted on disk.
  • Extensible TypeScript codebase suitable for building custom Openclaw Skills extensions.
