What is Bitwarden?

Bitwarden is a leading open source password management solution designed for individuals and teams to store, share, and protect sensitive data. This integration allows AI agents to interact with Bitwarden vaults, facilitating the retrieval and management of login credentials, credit cards, and secure notes. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, developers can automate security workflows without handling raw API keys directly.

The skill provides a robust interface to interact with Bitwarden Items and Collections within Organizations. It abstracts the complexity of authentication and credential refresh, ensuring that security data remains accessible yet protected under professional-grade encryption standards.

Bitwarden Use Cases

  • Retrieving secure credentials for automated deployment workflows.
  • Auditing vault items for security compliance or outdated records.
  • Programmatically creating and organizing shared collections for team members.
  • Managing identity and credit card information for automated form-filling tasks.

How Bitwarden Works

  1. Initialize the environment by installing the Membrane CLI to manage authentication.
  2. Authenticate the agent with a specific tenant to establish a secure session.
  3. Create or ensure a connection to the Bitwarden domain to trigger the OAuth or API key handshake.
  4. Poll the connection status until it reaches a READY state.
  5. Discover available Bitwarden actions based on the user's specific intent using natural language search.
  6. Execute vault operations like fetching logins or updating records via structured action calls or proxy requests.

Bitwarden Setup

Install the CLI and authenticate using the following commands:

npm install -g @membranehq/cli@latest
membrane login --tenant --clientName=openclaw

Ensure the connection to Bitwarden:

membrane connection ensure "https://bitwarden.com/" --json

If the state is BUILDING, poll for readiness:

npx @membranehq/cli connection get <id> --wait --json

Bitwarden Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data around the Bitwarden Vault architecture, returning machine-readable JSON for all operations.

Component Description
Vault The primary secure container for all sensitive data records.
Items Individual records such as logins, notes, cards, or identities.
Organizations Shared structures for managing access across multiple users.
Collections Logical groupings within organizations to refine access control.

Bitwarden Advanced Features

  • Automatic credential refresh and server-side secret management via Membrane.
  • Natural language action discovery to find relevant security tools without manual documentation lookups.
  • Direct API proxying with automatic header injection for custom Bitwarden endpoints.
  • Support for headless environments with remote authorization flows.
  • Compatibility with multiple agent types through the Openclaw Skills framework.
