What is Bloomin8?

The Bloomin8 skill enables seamless control over e-ink photo frames, providing developers with the tools to manage visual content through two primary channels. By leveraging Openclaw Skills, you can interact with devices via a Cloud API for remote, asynchronous updates or use a Local BLE + LAN mode for near-instantaneous image displays. This integration allows for sophisticated workflows where AI agents can generate content and project it directly onto hardware displays.

This utility is designed for high reliability, featuring automatic image resizing, format conversion to JPEG baseline, and robust device discovery. Whether you are managing a single frame in a living room or a fleet of displays across an office, this skill provides the necessary endpoints and CLI tools to maintain constant visual communication with your e-ink hardware.

Bloomin8 Use Cases

  • Automating the delivery of daily AI-generated art or motivational quotes using Openclaw Skills.
  • Displaying real-time system dashboards or weather updates on an ambient e-ink screen.
  • Pushing markdown-formatted meeting agendas or to-do lists directly to a desktop photo frame.
  • Managing multiple IoT display devices remotely through a centralized cloud interface.
  • Creating instant photo sharing workflows that bypass cloud latency using local BLE and WiFi discovery.

How Bloomin8 Works

  1. The skill identifies the target device either through environment variables (for Cloud API) or through local BLE scanning for nearby hardware.
  2. In Cloud Mode, a request is sent to the Bloomin8 REST API where the image or markdown is queued; the device pulls this content during its next scheduled wake cycle.
  3. In Local Mode, the skill wakes the device via a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) command and retrieves its current IP address and screen specifications.
  4. The content is processed locally, ensuring it matches the exact pixel dimensions and JPEG baseline requirements of the specific e-ink hardware.
  5. The processed image is uploaded directly to the device over the local network for immediate rendering without waiting for a wake schedule.
  6. Status updates and delivery history are tracked to ensure the user is informed of the successful display of content.

Bloomin8 Setup

To get started with this skill within the Openclaw Skills ecosystem, ensure your environment is prepared for both cloud and local communication.

  1. Install the required Python dependencies:
pip install bleak aiohttp pillow
  1. For Cloud API access, obtain your device token from the Bloomin8 app and set the corresponding environment variable:
export BLOOMIN8_TOKEN_YOUR_DEVICE_NAME="your_api_token_here"
  1. On macOS, ensure your terminal or IDE has Bluetooth permissions enabled in System Settings. On Linux, ensure BlueZ is installed and your user is in the bluetooth group.

Bloomin8 Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill manages device metadata and state through a local cache and structured API responses. Data is organized as follows:

Component Details
Device Cache Stored at ~/.bloomin8/device_cache.json, containing names, IDs, last known IPs, and screen dimensions.
Image Specs Requires JPEG baseline format. Common sizes include 480x800 (7.3") and 1200x1600 (10.3").
Cloud Status Tracks PENDING, PULLED, COMPLETED, FAILED, and CANCELLED states for remote pushes.
Scaling Logic Uses a scaling formula based on min(width / 375, height / 812) to ensure markdown renders correctly across different screen sizes.

Bloomin8 Advanced Features

  • Server-side markdown rendering with support for themes like minimal, dark, and paper for high-quality text displays.
  • Intelligent local caching that allows for faster direct-IP uploads by skipping BLE discovery for known devices.
  • Configurable wake intervals (10m, 1h, 3h, 6h) to balance between content freshness and battery longevity.
  • Support for resizing modes including cover (center crop), contain (fit with white background), and stretch.
  • Comprehensive JSON output support for all CLI commands, enabling programmatic integration and multi-agent orchestration via Openclaw Skills.
