What is Boot Camp?

Boot Camp is a foundational utility designed to bridge the gap between an AI agent's knowledge and your specific CLI environment. Many agents struggle with command syntax or outdated flag information; this skill solves that by performing deep discovery of your installed Openclaw environment. By generating a local reference file, it ensures your agent has a ground-truth source for all available commands, subcommands, and flags.

This tool is an essential addition to any library of Openclaw Skills, as it directly reduces token waste caused by trial-and-error command execution. Whether you are running a vanilla installation or a heavily customized setup, Boot Camp creates a tailored map for your AI to follow.

Boot Camp Use Cases

  • Preventing AI agents from hallucinating non-existent CLI flags or subcommands.
  • Onboarding new AI agents to a custom Openclaw environment.
  • Updating reference documentation after a major Openclaw version upgrade.
  • Reducing token costs by providing clear, local context for CLI operations.

How Boot Camp Works

  1. The script initiates a discovery process by probing the Openclaw binary in your PATH.
  2. It recursively executes help commands to map out every top-level command and its associated subcommands.
  3. The tool identifies supported flags and checks for specific capabilities like JSON output support.
  4. Optionally, it crawls official documentation to enrich local data with tips and external links.
  5. It compiles all discovered data into a structured Markdown file located in the agent's workspace.

Boot Camp Setup

To get started with Boot Camp, ensure Openclaw is in your PATH and you are using Bash 4+. Run the following command:

bash bootcamp.sh

For automated environments or CI/CD pipelines, use the non-interactive flags:

bash bootcamp.sh --yes --enrich

Boot Camp Data Schema & Taxonomy

Boot Camp generates a persistent reference file at ~/.openclaw/workspace/notes/openclaw-cli-reference.md. The data is organized as follows:

Data Point Description
Commands Full list of top-level Openclaw commands and descriptions.
Subcommands Hierarchical mapping of nested CLI actions.
Flags Detailed list of arguments and parameters for each command.
JSON Support Metadata indicating which commands support machine-readable output.
Tips/Gotchas Contextual advice and documentation links (in Enrich mode).

Boot Camp Advanced Features

  • Local + Enrich Mode: Combines local discovery with real-time documentation scraping for the most comprehensive reference.
  • Version Management: Smart detection of existing docs with options to overwrite or maintain side-by-side versions.
  • Non-Interactive Mode: Full CLI support for headless configuration via the --yes flag.
  • Zero-Dependency Design: Requires only Bash 4+, making it compatible with almost any Linux/macOS environment using Openclaw Skills.
