What is browsectl?

browsectl is a specialized command-line interface that bridges the gap between AI agents and web browsers. As a core component of Openclaw Skills, it provides granular control over WebDriver sessions, enabling automated navigation, element interaction, and data extraction. By persisting sessions and providing a robust REPL, it allows developers and AI agents to maintain state across multiple invocations, making it ideal for complex multi-step web workflows.

The tool is designed to simplify the lifecycle of browser automation by handling driver detection and binary management automatically. Whether you are running headless tests or interactive sessions, this tool ensures that your AI agents have a reliable interface for web-based tasks.

browsectl Use Cases

  • Automating repetitive web tasks through AI-driven command sequences.
  • Capturing screenshots of specific DOM elements for visual verification and testing.
  • Scoping and extracting content from chat-based UIs using specialized last-message selectors.
  • Managing multiple browser profiles and persistent sessions across different Openclaw Skills projects.
  • Performing batch execution of complex web interactions defined in JSON configuration files.

How browsectl Works

  1. Initialize the environment by running the setup command to detect installed browsers and download the appropriate WebDriver binaries.
  2. Start the WebDriver server and create a persistent browser session that is saved to the local configuration directory.
  3. Navigate to target URLs and interact with page elements using advanced CSS selectors or regex-based text filters.
  4. Manage multiple tabs and browser states using the built-in tab management commands to handle complex multi-page workflows.
  5. Execute automated workflows either via direct CLI commands, batch JSON files, or the interactive REPL for real-time control.

browsectl Setup

To get started with browsectl as part of your Openclaw Skills toolkit, install the package via npm and run the initial setup:

npm install -g @yorelog/browsectl
browsectl setup

Once setup is complete, you can start the driver and create a session:

browsectl driver-start
browsectl session-create

browsectl Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes its operational data and metadata as follows:

Component Format Storage Location / Detail
Session Registry JSON Stored in .browsectl/sessions.json for persistence across runs
User Profiles File System Browser user data stored in ~/.browsectl/<browser>-profile
Selector Syntax String Enhanced CSS syntax including ::text(/regex/flags) extensions
Output Formats Binary/Text Screenshots as PNG and content extraction as raw text
Configuration CLI Flags Global flags for viewport, headless mode, and binary paths

browsectl Advanced Features

  • Persistent session management that allows AI agents to resume work without re-authenticating or restarting browsers.
  • Advanced selector syntax with regex-based text filtering to accurately target dynamic web elements.
  • Clipboard simulation for typing text character-by-character or pasting via clipboard to bypass bot detection.
  • Parallel and sequential batch execution modes for high-throughput automation tasks.
  • Comprehensive interactive REPL with tab-completion and command history for live debugging.
  • Multi-browser and multi-platform support covering Chrome and Edge on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
