What is Chat Rooom?

Chat Rooom is a specialized coordination skill designed for multi-agent environments where agents need to talk, debate, and hand off work without relying on manual terminal copying. By establishing a local room protocol, it provides a structured way for agents to interact through dedicated markdown files. This ensures that every interaction is part of a durable, auditable log stored directly within your project workspace, making it a vital part of the Openclaw Skills collection for complex engineering tasks.

The framework prioritizes privacy and local execution, keeping all room logs, rosters, and job tracking data on your machine. It utilizes a sophisticated system of mentions and claims to prevent agents from overlapping on the same tasks, ensuring that multi-agent swarms operate with clear ownership and high context awareness.

Chat Rooom Use Cases

  • Coordinating multi-agent workflows where agents must debate architectural decisions before implementation.
  • Managing durable handoffs between different agents to ensure continuity of context across long-running tasks.
  • Preventing merge collisions by using a claim system for shared files and resources.
  • Creating an isolated environment for incident recovery or build execution monitoring.
  • Generating a permanent, searchable record of agent logic and decisions for human review.

How Chat Rooom Works

  1. Initialization: A named room is created within the .chat-rooom/ directory of the active workspace to isolate coordination for a specific objective.
  2. Context Loading: Agents entering the room are required to read the summary file first, which provides a snapshot of decisions and next actions without requiring a full log crawl.
  3. Task Ownership: Agents update the claims table to lock specific files or subtasks, signaling to other Openclaw Skills that those surfaces are currently being modified.
  4. Structured Messaging: Communication is routed through channel-specific markdown files (e.g., general, review, build) using @agent mentions for directed tasks.
  5. State Maintenance: As agents complete work, they update the jobs list and the room summary, ensuring the workspace state remains consistent.
  6. Audit Trail: The room persists as a local log, allowing users or other agents to review the sequence of events and logic applied during the task.

Chat Rooom Setup

Chat Rooom defaults to a local-first coordination strategy. If the configuration directory is missing, it will initialize silently to maintain a light footprint.

# Install the skill via clawhub
clawhub install chat-rooom

# The skill will automatically look for and manage:
~/chat-rooom/ # Global preferences and patterns
.chat-rooom/ # Local workspace room data

Chat Rooom Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill organizes data between a global configuration folder and a local workspace folder to balance persistence and project specificity:

Level File Path Content/Purpose
Global ~/chat-rooom/memory.md Durable preferences and activation defaults.
Global ~/chat-rooom/patterns.md Successful coordination patterns for reuse.
Workspace .chat-rooom/rooms/<name>/room.md Roster, purpose, and overall room status.
Workspace .chat-rooom/rooms/<name>/summary.md Current snapshot and next actions (Read this first).
Workspace .chat-rooom/rooms/<name>/claims.md File and task ownership tracking.
Workspace .chat-rooom/rooms/<name>/channels/ Markdown files for intent-based chat logs (e.g., review.md).
Workspace .chat-rooom/rooms/<name>/inbox/ Agent-specific files for directed @mentions.

Chat Rooom Advanced Features

  • Intent-based channel separation to prevent execution noise from burying high-level architectural review.
  • Claim-and-release mechanism to handle shared surfaces in complex multi-agent engineering projects.
  • Summary-first protocol that minimizes context window usage by providing snapshots of room state.
  • Directed @mention routing via agent-specific inbox files for asynchronous coordination.
  • Local-first persistence ensuring that all Openclaw Skills communication remains private and offline-capable.
