What is chmod-calc?

The chmod-calc skill is a specialized technical utility designed to simplify the management of Linux file permissions. It bridges the gap between human-readable intent and machine-executable commands by translating back and forth between octal (numeric) notation, symbolic strings (rwxr-xr-x), and plain English descriptions.

Built for developers and system administrators using Openclaw Skills, this tool eliminates the guesswork and potential security risks associated with manual permission calculations. It handles standard bits for read, write, and execute, as well as advanced special bits like setuid, setgid, and the sticky bit, ensuring accurate configuration for any environment.

chmod-calc Use Cases

  • Translating a cryptic symbolic string like rwxr-sr-x into its numeric equivalent (2755).
  • Generating the correct chmod command based on a verbal description like "owner can read and write, others nothing."
  • Auditing existing file permissions to understand exactly what access levels are granted to owners, groups, and others.
  • Learning the bitwise logic behind Linux permissions for educational or troubleshooting purposes.

How chmod-calc Works

  1. The skill receives an input which can be a 3 or 4-digit octal number, a 9-character symbolic string, or a natural language description.
  2. It parses the input to identify the specific permission bits for the three entities: Owner, Group, and Others.
  3. It calculates the sum of the bit values (Read=4, Write=2, Execute=1) for each entity and checks for special leading bits (Setuid, Setgid, Sticky).
  4. The skill generates a comprehensive output including the numeric notation, symbolic notation, and two variations of the chmod command.
  5. It provides a plain-English breakdown of what each entity is permitted to do based on the calculated values.

chmod-calc Setup

To add this capability to your environment, include the chmod-calc configuration in your Openclaw Skills directory:

# Example directory structure
# skills/chmod-calc/SKILL.md

No external dependencies are required as the logic is handled natively via the skill's permission bit decomposition rules.

chmod-calc Data Schema & Taxonomy

The skill processes and returns data structured across several permission taxonomies:

Attribute Description Example
Numeric 3 or 4-digit octal representation 755 or 4755
Symbolic 9 or 10-character string rwxr-xr-x
Commands Executable shell snippets chmod 755 filename
Entities Granular breakdown of permissions Owner, Group, Others

It organizes the metadata by decomposing the octet OGO (Owner, Group, Others) and evaluating bit 2 (r), bit 1 (w), and bit 0 (x) for each.

chmod-calc Advanced Features

  • Support for 4th leading digit special bits: Setuid (4), Setgid (2), and Sticky (1).
  • Symbolic command clause generation (e.g., u+s for setuid) for more readable shell scripts.
  • Automated security warnings: Triggers a notification if the user attempts to set 777 permissions, highlighting the inherent security risks.
  • Natural language processing: Understands descriptive phrases to find the correct octal mapping without requiring technical input.
